Mamdani is giving away 70,000 free Met opera tickets. Burnham wants people (ie blokes) to be able to drink beer in football stands. Now I like football and beer, and I don't kike opera, but I know whose side I'm on.

After flying home from Geneva last weekend I now have a raging bout of flu or something worse. The whole journey home was terrible - overcrowded airports, long shuffling boarding queues and packed planes. Flying really is the worst way to travel.

Having spent a lot of time in Wetherspoons in dismal Durham towns, I can see they have an important social function. Old people meet their friends for lunch, lonely middle aged men enjoy a burger and pint(!), families out for a cheap tea. Hubbub of conversation everywhere. Nationalise Spoons now...

It’s World Gratitude Day, so I’m going to thank Jemima who donated her stem cells to treat my blood cancer, and then two years later, her lymphocyte cells to rescue me from relapse into leukaemia. Without her, I almost certainly wouldn’t be here today.
