A numberless messaging app

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Just connect and talk. By the way, it is E2EE, decentralized, and tracks nothing. Enjoy messaging.

Peacefully. Maybe messaging does not need more ways for people to find you. Maybe it needs fewer. Your phone number can continue doing whatever phone numbers are doing now. Let messaging be something else. Download Wave for peaceful messaging. No number. No email. No username.

Your inbox should not be a public door just because one piece of information about you is floating around everywhere. And once you are inside Wave, all the technical stuff should just disappear into the background. just open the app and message the people you actually want to message.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
You need nothing to start a conversation. No phone number. No email. No username. Just scan it. Connect. Talk. That is it. Someone should be able to message you because you chose to connect with them. Not because they somehow got the same number you used to order food three months ago.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Identity and permission should be two different things. Of course, we cannot really fix phone numbers now. They are everywhere. Everyone uses them. Fine. But messaging does not have to use them. That is the idea behind Wave. A private place for the people you actually want to talk to.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
knowing your identity became the same thing as having permission to contact you. Know the phone number? Message them. Know the username? DM them. Why? Why does knowing one identifier automatically mean you should get access to someone’s inbox? That part never made sense.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Some business you do not even remember giving your number to. People you never decided you wanted to talk to. Congrats. You unlocked endless spam. But spam is not even the real problem. The real problem is this:
100
Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Signup. Verification. Calls. Contacts. Messaging. And now anybody who gets that one identity can potentially reach you there too. Then comes the fun part. Promotional messages. Random WhatsApp messages. Political campaigns. Scam links.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
People you probably forgot even had your number. And every other app is asking them: “Allow access to contacts?” They tap allow. Now think about this. The same number sitting everywhere is also the number tied to your messaging identity. Congrats. You created one identity for everything.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Here is a direct way to message me.” Those are not the same thing. And only god knows how many of your contacts gave contact permission to random apps. Your number is sitting in your friends’ phones. Family phones. Coworkers’ phones. Old classmates.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
So the number you casually give somewhere just to use a service is also the same thing someone can use to reach your personal inbox. That is where it gets weird. You are basically saying: “Here is my number so I can use your service.” But somehow that can also mean:

Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
You are just trying to sign up. Or verify yourself. Or order something. Or just see the damn menu. But the funny part is, the same phone number is also your identity on messaging apps.
100
Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
You give your number to a delivery app. A shopping app. Some loyalty program. You use your number to sign up on some random app on a typical Friday and probably never open it again. And most of the time, you are not giving your number because you want these people to message you.
100
Wave @wavemsg.app · 13/09/2026
Alright lets talk about Phone Numbers Phone numbers were used to call somebody or get a call from somebody. That was basically it. Then after some time, they became more than that. Now you give your number at a supermarket checkout. You give your number at a restaurant just to check the menu.

We just told the truth

We never track you. Your messages never reach a central server, we don’t collect any of your data, your messages are end-to-end encrypted (E2EE), and the protocol is open source and audited. But yeah, we’re “untrustworthy,” as you say.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 07/09/2026
Working on Android. The protocol Wave is built on is open source. Wave needs nothing, Signal needs phone number and Signal doesn’t have ATProto integration, so you can’t message people from your ATProto network directly within the app without leaving it.

A much needed update 💬 Disappearing messages now work in groups. 🗑️ Unsend photos & voice notes you’ve sent. 🖼️ Pick your own profile photo & set custom photos for your groups. 🔗 Share your profile using a link & reset it anytime to disable the old link. ✨ A refreshed onboarding experience.

Merci beaucoup ! 😊 Nous sommes ravis que Wave vous plaise. Nous ne faisons que commencer, et nous avons encore beaucoup de choses prévues.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 26/06/2026
Yes, exactly. External contacts are simply people who use the Wave app. Multi-language support isn’t on our current roadmap, but maybe in the future. And yes, we need that badge too 😄. We just need someone who can help us get it.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 26/06/2026
You can connect with people outside Bluesky too. Wave supports both Bluesky & external contacts in one place. We can’t import WhatsApp contacts because we don’t collect user data, so we don’t know who is who. More personalization is coming, and Wave is already ahead of Germ in features & privacy.

Going all in on notifications. In the next update, you'll be able to control notifications at both the app level and the conversation level.

@wavemsg.app supports encrypted groups and DMs and links to your Bluesky identity. Sadly still iOS only. Hopefully the @xmtp.org people are still working on @convosmessenger.bsky.social for Android so people can make groups and share them by link

A single message on wave saved somebody from a wedding invitation embarrassment.

Wave isn’t growing because of aggressive marketing, ads, or data collection. It’s growing because people who care about privacy are finding it and sharing it. Nobody should have to trade their privacy for a messaging app. That’s what Wave is here to change.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 09/06/2026
250 downloads may seem small, but it’s only the beginning. The biggest reason Wave is still small is simple: only a small fraction of people know it exists. As more people discover it, more people will use it.

Wave just reached 250 downloads. 🎉 It took 158 days to get here, and I want to thank every single person who downloaded, used, and trusted Wave. Wave was built with one goal: to provide true privacy in messaging. Nothing more, nothing less.

Coming to wave. You can message fellow AT Protocol users directly within the app, we don't collect user data, and have no control on users. More about wave here bsky.app/profile/wave...

Sure, and thank you for the suggestion Germ relies on centralized servers and currently lacks features like groups and photo sharing Signal is good, but it depends on phone numbers & centralized servers. Access to the app can be controlled Discord is big but it collects everything about the user

Wave is currently owned and developed by @mesimhadri.bsky.social. Wave is built on XMTP (@xmtp.org), an open messaging protocol. XMTP has mechanisms for funding apps, so founders, sponsors, or anyone interested can support Wave in the future. As of now, Wave has no plans to monetize.

If you're already using Bluesky and other AT Proto apps, Wave gives you a private way to communicate without giving up control of your data. Private by default. Decentralized by design. Built for AT Protocol. Download Wave : apps.apple.com/in/app/wave-...

2/ Wave is fully decentralized. There are no Wave-owned servers storing your messages or social graph. The app operates entirely on a decentralized network. Nothing from the app goes to a central server, and we have no interest in collecting or storing user data.

Wave @wavemsg.app · 31/05/2026
1) Wave is E2EE Every conversation on Wave is protected with end-to-end encryption, only the sender and recipient can read the messages. Wave also uses post-quantum cryptography. Your conversations stay private not only today, but are built with the future in mind.
