If you're ambitious, government isn't the place for you. It rewards mediocrity and caps what brilliance is worth. The private sector isn't a guaranteed win, but there's competition for your skills, and room to own what you build instead of just accepting a pay scale as your ceiling.

Adult stars are now pumping out climate PR. But 8 in 10 Britons already care about the planet. The real issue is government backing feel-good policies over real solutions. If Lily Phillips and co want to help they'd do nuclear regulation. Grid constraints. Litter and sewage. Now that's sexy.

You don't cure scarcity by giving the state more control over scarce things. Grace is right: of course wars, energy costs and bad harvests can spark inflation. But a one-off shock turns into lasting inflation because governments keep overspending and central banks print money to cover it.

Jonathan, you've got this one wrong. Your diagnosis is right, but the cure is shallow. The stakeholder state isn't an accident. It's what government naturally becomes when political actors spend other people's money, face no penalty for failure, and get rewarded for expanding budgets.

Your parents could earn an average salary, save up, and buy a house. Today, average house prices are nearly 8x your salary, making hard work alone no longer enough to get onto the property ladder. The dream was that work could turn into capital. That freedom is getting harder to realise.

Inequality has never been the problem. The problem is a world that rewards wealth built on subsidies, contracts and political favour. Strip that out, and it's still capitalism that allows everyone a shot at getting richer. #unitedkingdom #economics #politics

No Zack, taxing one bogeyman to subsidise another isn't fixing the banking system. It's the government creating a privilege, skimming it, then deciding who gets the leftovers #polanski #economics #unitedkingdom

Government has crashed the economy. Borrowing more and more to make itself bigger and bigger. And guess who picks up the bill? You, every time.

Prices aren't just numbers, they're how the world talks to itself. A high price is simply a message: "This is hard to get right now. Use less, and make more." When governments force prices to stay low, they mute that message. The shortage doesn't go away, businesses just run out of stock.

In 1961, English football capped wages and restricted freedom. Removing those limits created a multi-billion pound global phenomenon. Here is how a simple economic shift transformed the game, and why it applies to everyday business.

27% of 16-to-29-year-olds would prefer to live in a dictatorship over a democracy. Former Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption explains why disenchantment is rising among the youth, from generational divides on climate change to economic systems stacking the odds against them.

Energy isn’t just an economic sector, it’s the raw material every other sector is built on. Cheap, abundant energy makes societies thrive. Artificially expensive energy freezes them. So how did Britain end up with some of the highest power prices in the developed world?

Why is a diamond worth more than water when you need water to survive? Because value is subjective. Water is cheap at home, but in a desert, you’d trade a Rolex for it. The water hasn't changed, your circumstances have.

Why work part-time when benefits pay £100 a week MORE? Teens claiming PIP for anxiety are officially earning more than minimum wage part-timers, taking home more for doing nothing than working maximum hours. When benefits pay more than a job, the incentive to work completely vanishes.

Andy Burnham and the Labour Party say they are betting big on devolution. But adding layers of government isn't local control if they’re still following Whitehall’s rules. Real local power means the freedom to compete, for businesses, families, and investment.

Stop arguing about privatisation vs. nationalisation. We’re asking the wrong question. The real debate isn't public vs. private. It’s government allocation vs. genuine competition.

Why is the government’s goal to collect as much of your money as possible? Right now, £1 of every £10 you pay in tax goes straight to interest on government debt. The money you earn tomorrow is paying for promises politicians made yesterday.

Americans started a revolution over a 2% tax. In the UK, the government takes nearly half your income and expects you to just accept it. The trick? Stealth taxes. PAYE, hidden VAT, and fiscal drag take your money before you ever see it.

Imagine waking up tomorrow with £1,000,000 in your bank account. Spoiler: You still wouldn’t be rich. During COVID, the Bank of England created £450 billion out of thin air. But printing money doesn't create wealth, it just creates £40 coffees, £20M houses, and hands you the bill through inflation.

Meet Shenzhen’s "handshake houses": the messy affordable housing phenomenon that actually worked. No green space. No insulation. Cramped, sunless, and packed 3,000 people to a hectare. Western planners would call it a nightmare, but it lifted millions out of poverty.
