No surprise at all. Just a read of the Executive Summary shows it to be nothing more than a re-hash of old denier talking points. "U.S. policy actions are expected to have undetectably small direct impacts on the global climate and any effects will emerge only with long delays." Simply untrue.

The "Construction Physics" newsletter this week had a very real truth about the industry that I think is important for everyone to realize. The software we are building here at Wasteguard Innovations will help to mitigate this aspect of construction and pave the way for change in the industry.

The Wasteguard Innovations whitepaper, titled "Re-evaluating Construction Waste: A Value-Based Approach to Economic and Environmental Impact," challenges the longstanding method the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses to assess construction and demolition (C&D) waste—namely, weight-based metrics. It argues that this method creates a critical distortion in understanding the true impact of waste, since heavy, low-value materials like concrete dominate by mass, while lighter, high-value materials like copper, steel, and hardwoods are largely overlooked despite their outsized financial and environmental significance.

The whitepaper proposes a value-based waste assessment model, which prioritizes the intrinsic economic and environmental worth of materials over their sheer volume. This paradigm shift reveals that even though materials like concrete make up the bulk of landfill tonnage, the real loss lies in the disposal of high-value resources that are often more difficult to recycle and carry a much larger carbon footprint per unit weight.

Using comparative cost and density data, the paper quantifies how weight-based systems undervalue materials like engineered lumber and scrap metals. It highlights the environmental damage of discarding scarce, carbon-intensive resources—pointing to embodied energy, emissions, and resource depletion.

Strategically, the paper recommends policy shifts, such as updating EPA metrics to include value-based tracking, incentivizing recovery of high-value materials, and supporting deconstruction practices over demolition. It also encourages industry adoption of better tracking and accountability technologies.

In essence, the whitepaper redefines C&D waste from a tonnage problem to a resource mismanagement crisis, advocating for smarter metrics that align with circular economy principles and offer more accurate data for climate, economic, and policy decisions.

Construction (C&D) Waste - Weight vs. Value In a whitepaper by Wasteguard Innovations, we analyze the accuracy of EPA estimations of C&D waste and conclude that VALUE, NOT WEIGHT, should be the metric for properly gauging C&D waste. Read more here: wasteguardinnovations.com/whitepaper

Current methods, like those used by the EPA, measure construction and demolition (C&D) waste by **weight**. This simple metric creates a distorted picture, masking the true economic and environmental cost of what we throw away. Whitepaper: wasteguard.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/Construction...

"More than 75% of all construction waste from wood, drywall, asphalt shingles, bricks and clay tiles ends up in landfills. (EPA)" THE ONLY PROBLEMS WITH THIS: The stat is based on pure tonage (i.e. waste) when VALUE should be considered instead. By the time concrete goes to dump, its worth $0.
