New research by Kristin Guilliams, MD, and colleagues, published in Brain Research Bulletin, suggests that earlier and longer treatment of children with sickle cell anemia with hydroxyurea was linked to better gray matter and total brain volume. bit.ly/3TVoaQY
Infographic titled “Brain Bulletin Research” about whether hydroxyurea promotes brain development in children with sickle cell anemia. It summarizes a retrospective cohort study of 330 longitudinal MRI scans comparing children with sickle cell anemia and controls, showing that early and long-term hydroxyurea use is associated with less reduction in brain gray matter, improved brain structure, and better somatic growth.
