He didn't say it here and wasn't even on this pier but nonetheless Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower was in Bangor, Co. Down and addressed the crews of U.S. Navy ships bound for Normandy shores.
Plaque reads: From here started the long hard march to Allied victory - Dwight D. Eisenhower. "Opposite this point was the gathering area for a massive convoy of mixed ships which sailed to arrive at the beaches of Normandy on D-Day 6th June 1944.

D-Day, 6th June 1944 is one of the most commemorated events in the history of the Second World War. One of the most original items I found when I worked in Belfast's Linen Hall Library is this beautiful hand-painted linen handkerchief bearing the flags of the Allies.

Just finished 'The Undefeated' by Bill Robertson. My grandfather spent more of the Second World War in P.O.W. camps than he did in his tank and this well-researched book has been invaluable in helping me understand this time. A must-read for anyone with an interest in this wartime history.

The division was massed and looked as well – or better – than the 5th. It was a most inspiring sight. After lunch, they put on a battalion, reinforced, in an attack on a hostilely occupied position. It was the best thing of its sort I have ever seen. They used marching fire and two men were hurt, one in the fleshy part of the right shoulder, the other in the calf of the leg. Nothing serious. The man hit in the shoulder kept on and even threw grenades. It showed a very fine spirit. The man who will do that in maneuvers will go a long way in battle.
