"Some generations plant the trees, leaving it to others to build the
barrels and taste what they brew. If we can do better than this, we
should. But this is enough. If we want to achieve justice, in our lifetime
or anyone’s, we should act like ancestors.
For better or worse, our ancestors constructed this world in their
image. We owe it to our descendants to rebuild it, in a new one"

I've always wondered what was going on with this one.

Curious how much shifted in reaction to Haiti - though as I understand it the Saint-Domingue's form of slavery is very different in sheer scale of death amoung other distinctions of form.

My favorite part of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books is her state appointed therapist declaring she is completely sane and acting rationally.

I try to ignore a lot of it given how algorithm driven discourse is. But it's funny the new Star Wars game has right wing outrage over the existence of... a free market conservative character.

Haven't watched the new but felt she was wasted in season 3.

If they concede it's optimal... What's the upshot here? "Why should I care?" Is a question that can be posed to anything.

That doesn't mean you are not on firmer ground at all. "Seeing a living human being as an automaton is analogous to seeing one figure as a limiting case or variant of another; the cross-pieces of a window as a swastika, for example"

I would say there's a fair amount of work adjacent to that. Manon Garcia's newest book goes into the gender polarization of the Gisele Pelicot trial. But maybe a bit more specific than what you had in mind.

Whenever someone mentions how alien the ancient greek world is, rarely does it get mentioned how insanely liberal Xenia is. Its rude to ask someone their name until they are basically your roommate.

Manon Garcia's "Living with Men" is exceptional and heartbreaking about this

May be misremembering but believe the podcast @leftofphilosophy.bsky.social reached a similar conclusion in an episode

Reminded of this point from Angela Davis in 1985
A quote from Angela Davis 1985 booklet Violence against women and the ongoing challenge to Racism: "I want to suggest to you that rape bears a direct relationship to all of the existing power structures in a given society. This relationship is not a simple mechanical one, but rather involves complex structures reflecting the complex interconnectedness of race, gender, and-" (end of image)

I think it's also clear in CLR James text (which from what I can tell has aged remarkably well) - He makes the point that it's almost striking how long it takes to become a story of vengeance.

people should stop thinking like pundits. thinking like a pundit is how you lose the ability to ask questions that don’t reduce down to “does this win votes?”
