A poll meant to question PBS found Trump underwater in Alabama, instead
Trump's support in Alabama doesn't mirror the intensity of disapproval.

Alabama public television commissioners polled PBS approval with an eye toward cutting ties. Instead, they showed Trump’s approval is underwater in the state.

Election laws for thee but not for me. Alabama law requires candidates for lieutenant governor to have lived in the state for the last seven straight years. So why did the GOP nominee register to vote in Tennessee six years ago?

7/ Raines' piece is great, and it's easiest for America to see its faults when they're on display somewhere else. But make no mistake — something like this is happening close to home, wherever you find yourself in America today. 🎁🔗👇 www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

The Alabamafication of National Politics
What the race between Doug Jones and Tommy Tuberville says about America’s past and future

6/ This is not the Alabamafication of America anymore. That part's over. This is the result. We live in the United States of Alabama now.

5/ In place of competent government, we have a White House that rules through public bullying and no-bid contracts, and a legislature too weak and too scared to do anything about it.

Kyle Whitmire @warondumb.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
4/ State police regularly trample the rights of citizens. The administration fights to revoke the citizenship of people it doesn't like and imprisons others when it can't.

3/ Last month, the president celebrated his birthday with a cage fight on the White House lawn — a sport that spent its outlaw years taking refuge in Alabama and a few other states too indifferent to ban it.

1/ I appreciate Howell Raines giving me credit for naming "Alabamafication." A lot has happened since I coined that term in the spring of 2016, and I've come to think it's no longer sufficient. 🧵

10/ Here's his mistake. He can post that the place was packed and dare you to argue. That works on people who weren't there. But this weekend his own people will be there. You can lie to a crowd about its size. You can't tell a man he had a good time when he didn't.

9/ Then there's the fireworks, now scheduled for 11 p.m. Trump has children, but I can tell he did not parent them. No parent schedules fireworks for 11 p.m. For families with small kids it might as well be 10 minutes before sunrise.

8/ Instead, where once there were vistas, there is particle board. Where there were marble obelisks and sandstone columns, there are paintings of obelisks and columns blocking the sightlines. The fair is a TV dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

7/ That's America's front lawn. Elm trees, monuments, Smithsonians on both sides. The Apollo 11 capsule. Archie Bunker's chair. It would be the perfect place to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday. If only Trump had left it alone.

6/ Nearly 150 years ago, the American government turned an ugly, deadly place into one of the most beautiful public spaces in the country. About 700 acres of new land. No bulldozers, no combustion engines, no slavery. Today, our government can't get green goo out of a pool.

5/ Down the hill from the Washington Monument sits a 350-square-foot stone house. The Lockkeeper's House. It's older than the monument itself. It sits on what used to be the muddy, deadly shoreline of the Potomac. The Army Corps didn't drain that swamp. They filled it.

3/ There's a Ferris wheel that creeps as Ferris wheels do, but no Tilt-a-Whirl. A fifty-foot mockup of the Arc de Trump looks like it's made of giant Duplo blocks. On the bandstands, lonely performers sometimes outnumber spectators.

2/ The green lagoon, at least, is interesting. So interesting, they stationed the National Guard there to keep people away on purpose. The east end of the Mall is empty for a different reason. It's insufferably boring.

Kyle Whitmire @warondumb.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
1/ A lot has been said about the Great American State Failure. Here's what's been missed: The National Mall was everything the fair aspires to be. It was free. It was fun. It was accessible. The fair is a phony copy that gets in the original's way. 🧵

NAACP puts out a call to Sam “Bam” Cunningham SEC states that redraw district maps. Don't laugh. If you don't live in the South, you don't know what this means. If successful, it hits these states where it hurts, where NIL was already undercutting SEC football dominance.
