We refuse to run reading groups for years before taking action, and we refuse to ignore the vast knowledge left to us by the revolutionaries of the past. If you’re interested in the intersection of theory and practice, DM us and come to distro!

We know that theory becomes purposeless if it is not connected with revolutionary practice. We also know that endless practices walk in circles in the dark until its path is illuminated by revolutionary theory.

At every reading group, we have discussed the theory through the lens of our weekly practice, where we spend countless hours ensuring that our twice weekly distros that serve 100+ unhoused members of our community happen every week without exception.

Every day, our most dispossessed neighbors face harassment from special bodies of armed men at the orders of the ruling class.

Right now, we are working through Lenin’s State and Revolution. We are learning about the State as an element of violent repression of one class by another, and discussing how we see this truth show up in our work.
Large text reads "State and Revolution, V.I. Lenin” in the middle left of the graphic. Above this text is the quote written in white: "The supersession of the bourgeois state by the proletarian state is impossible without a violent revolution." A cut-out image of the books laid out on a coffee table with refreshments, from when our members met up to read, is on the right. - The Communist Party of the Philippines’ “Mass Work” to learn about the Massline. In our context, the Massline is the idea that we must learn the needs of our neighbors from our neighbors, take the best solutions we have to our neighbors, learn from their critiques/feedback.

Read Up, Boston! We're a revolutionary left wing multi-tendency organization, and we're committed to furthering our knowledge of revolutionary theory in order to sharpen our revolutionary practice. Over the last few months, our Reading Group has been taking off! We've read....
At the top of the slide, the 5 heads of Marxism (the heads of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, and Mao) with an all-black filter. The background is bright red. Overlaid on the 5 heads is the quote “If you want knowledge, you must take part in the practice of changing reality" in white text. Below is the red text “Warm Up Boston Marxist Reading Group Recap”. The text is in between a white Hammer and Sickle symbol and the Warm Up Boston logo. A silhouetted and filtered picture of warmup volunteers on a distro is on the bottom. Below the volunteers white text reads: "Swipe to see what we've been reading" with a right-pointing arrow.

We're able to continue this level of support and increase the efficacy of our weekly distros through mutual aid and we would greatly appreciate any spare change you may be willing to send our way. These contributions would go towards purchasing tents and other vital supplies.
A pile of belongings gathered into plastic bags and bins, including cooking supplies, tents, and hygiene items, which all had to be moved due to the sweep or else risked getting thrown out. This pile comprises the entirety of a person’s belongings. An attack on the unhoused is an attack on everyone that works for their bread. Belongings in plastic bags are scattered across the ground. Text overlay reads: “Just a week & a half after that first sweep, our neighbors were displaced AGAIN, this time by BU Police and WITHOUT ANY NOTICE. This aggressive sweep started at 6 AM on a Friday morning, upending residents’ living spaces just as they had started to replace their necessities and regain some sense of peace. Cops told residents to pack up everything in 5 MINUTES or risk it bring thrown out. Let us be perfectly clear: the State is an organ of class rule, an organ for the oppression of one class by another. This is no clearer than at a sweep. The State is an illusion of so-called “order”, which legalizes and enacts this violence against workers.

Warm Up was able to deescalate some of these verbal attacks on our neighbors, but the stress and trauma from this violence inscribes itself into the body. We were able to enlist help to change wound dressings and refer folks to the hospital as well.

Policy failures kill. The increase of exterminationist policies by both the Trump administration and our local government is killing people who use drugs. Failed policies based in the racist War on Drugs will kill people who use drugs and incarcerate so many more.
Very dark grey, almost black, background color. Another gray sketchy hand peeks in from the top right side; it holds a needle. Three thin yellow squiggle lines "come out of" the fingers. For others it could mean something like more community involvement, deepening connections with loved ones, or improving self-care."

Meanwhile, unhoused people face higher levels of private violence and police brutality than housed people do [10, 11]. Though the behavior of our unhoused neighbors may be harmful in some instances, the systemic abuse perpetuated by the state far outweighs that harm. This is a result of the failure of capitalism, and should not be used to stigmatize all unhoused people but rather to critique the system that perpetuates their suffering."

Black text reads: "There are many reasons why shelters aren't an option for everyone. Limited open hours, lottery-based admission, and restrictions on belongings require guests to trade their independence for shelter. For people with disabilities, pets, or significant others, shelters may simply be unable to accommodate their needs. Studies show shelters can feel physically and mentally unsafe due for a range of reasons: abuse and harassment from other guests or staff, carceral policies, paternalism, poor sanitation, or spread of disease [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. Shelters are not a complete solution for homelessness. Encampments fill a need for autonomy and community."

Stay tuned for a wound care kit assembly day coming later this summer!
To afford this year's supply of kits we'd need to raise $2,000. That's why we're looking to you to raise funds -- and your cash can go further by buying bulk! You can venmo us @WarmUpBoston or donate via the link in our bio. However, if you prefer to donate in-kind, visit our Amazon wish list for the full list of supplies, or email us at contact@warmupboston.org to coordinate a supply donation.
bit.ly/WUBlistWe credit the knowledge in this post and in our wound care kids to the healthcare professionals and medics in our midst as well as resources from Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, Boston Medical Center, NEXT Distro, Tehya Johnson, Claire Zagorski, Bill Kinkle, and many others who have shared their lived experiences.A copy of the handout we distribute with our wound care kits that provides instructions for basic wound care and when to seek medical attention

However, supplies are very expensive. Your support, whether monetary or in-kind, helps us continue to distribute these vital supplies to our neighbors.
$0.17 ...the cost per 5mL bullet of saline
Saline is used for cleansing wounds when mild soap and water is not available. It helps rinse debris and bacteria out of wounds. We provide four bullets per kit which adds up fast!$6.46 ...the cost per 0.5oz Medihoney tube
Medihoney is a wound dressing that is useful for many types of wounds including necrotic and xylazine wounds. It helps with debridement which is the removal of dead tissue to promote healing. It's also an antiseptic; we include it or bacitracin in most kits in an effort to prevent bacterial infections from poor access to sanitation thanks to anti-homeless infrastructure.$0.41 ...the cost per 3" x 3" Adaptic pad
Adaptic or Xeroform are petroleum-impregnated dressings that are designed to help wounds heal by keeping the wound bed moist while also allowing excess moisture to transfer to a layered gauze pad, preserving the health of the periwound area. We currently distribute Adaptic because we've received feedback that it has a better smell, and dignity is important!$0.82 ...the cost per roll of Kerlix
Kerlix is a thicker gauze used for higher drainage wounds like chronic abscesses, which often impact people who inject drugs and do not have consistent access to health care. We also distribute medical tape, and for lower drainage wounds we distribute Telfa nonadherant pads.

Wound care is so important to us. Not only does distributing wound care supplies help maintain autonomy and dignity for unhoused folks, it helps prevent complications like endocarditis and sepsis that have killed far too many community members.
We operate in Boston, a major city with some of the best access to healthcare in the world. Unhoused communities have access to clinics and street outreach, making medical care very accessible. However, there is still a need for medical supplies among the unhoused:
- relationships with healthcare providers are impacted by encampment sweeps and policing
- people with chronic wounds may not have access to the amount of supplies they need
- people with wounds that appear minor may not seek care until they are already infected or necrotic
- stigma against people who use drugs and the unhoused can make it hard to seek careWe believe that distributing wound care supplies puts the ability to care for one's health into their own hands, providing autonomy. We also hand out informational guides with our kits, knowing that many folks who receive them know their own bodies best and may be better informed about their care than we are.
We receive feedback and revise these kits regularly, and we welcome feedback from our social media community as well!

In the same way that the Earth's ecosystems collaborate in springtime, we too at Warm Up come together as many individuals to make a whole, a collective. As the April/May rains nourish the soil and the sun encourages sprouts to pop up, we take care of and tend to one other, too.

Or maybe you have suggestions on equipment that we can invest in that would lift some of the supply-carrying burdens off of our volunteers' shoulders (literally). Insight and ideas are both so valuable!

We would also love fresh and new ideas about how we can improve our volunteer opportunities, to make them more accessible and inclusive. We want to brainstorm alternative ways for folks to "plug into" Warm Up and volunteering that don't necessitate attending in-person distros.

Are you a busy body that likes to walk around and talk to people? You should attend one of our mobile distros! This is where we go through downtown Boston to distribute various survival materials such as harm reduction supplies, hygiene goods, and snacks to unhoused folks.

Do you like to cook and bake? Amazing! Maybe you can make sandwiches or hot meals for us. For example, this week our encampments residents had chicken broccoli alfredo (made by a WUB volunteer).

And we aim to create that kind of inclusive, welcoming space, for both volunteers and for the people that we serve.

One of the cool things about Warm Up is that we believe everyone has their own unique talents and abilities to contribute. There are many ways for people to participate in mutual aid and solidarity, beyond what may be expected or assumed at first glance.
