I don't know how to get over the fact that companies immediately were like "eh, fuck our customers" as soon as US food safety standards were legally loosened. The infrastructure was already there. There had to be a conscious decision and action to fuck things up as badly as they did.

Years ago, I was in the ER, homeless lady had a small steak knife. Cops started escalating, one yelling "DROP IT!" the other "HAND IT OVER!" hands on guns, not tasers. They were escalating, and scared her. She was near me, and I said "Oh, that's a pretty knife, can I see it?" and she gave it to me.

Oh, we also had to unlist our phone number, and change it, because he would call all hours of the day and night, and just breathe heavily in the phone... and would follow my mom in his cruiser, threatening to "violate" her... Sheriffs department said he was one of their best. A decorated veteran!

This "cop" would break into people's yards, with his service weapon, drunk, and wearing only boxer shorts, and threaten to shoot their dogs. Sheriff's department would do NOTHING about it. This was the 70s, and I think, eventually, he managed to piss off some bikers. But I was 8.

In my town, you don't need that. They hire veterans, claiming military training is the same, and give them a week with another officer before on the streets by themselves. I believe this, because I was told this by a detective who was quite upset at the policy.

The US loves their guns, and most cops I knew in the past, only became cops because, and I quote "You get a gun, and you can just shoot people!" Including a neighbor who was a cop that would get drunk, and fire his gun in the air in his back yard, in a neighborhood.

Follow up: Cops are NOT good at deescalation. Shouting differing orders all at once while threatening a life... it's just confusion. I handed the cops the knife (even though I trusted the homeless lady with it more than them) and just said "It's called deescalation" They were quite angry with me.
