A fifth snippet from the original post this post is replying to. It reads:

“May Sin’s hold on them be burned away by your grace, and the remnants of His influence are reduced to ash”.

Cuffs stared at Lucinian for a moment, before shaking the questioning look off, beckoning him forward. Lucinian approached.

“We pray that you guide these misguided souls, and light the way to their salvation.”

Cuffs began unlocking Lucinian’s bindings as Robes finished their homily. They looked back down towards their tome, flipping back through some pages, glancing up at the line before catching Lucinian’s gaze. A thin bearded face could be seen beneath; nary a wrinkle in sight amongst the thick black facial hair.

Lucinian nodded to him. “Bangin’ sermon, my man”.

A snippet from the linked fanfic. This first snippet reads:

“Oh, I’m aware what’s waiting for you”, they stated, eyes focusing back on the wood.

Lucinian’s eyes imperceptibly narrowed. “And, what, you were going to keep us in suspense this whole time?”

“Why ruin the surprise?”, they shrugged, flicking a shaving off.

“Because that wouldn’t even be the best part!” Lucinian responded, faux elation swelling. “Personally, I’m curious if anyone else will take their shot of trying to best our captors; surely someone will get desperate.”

Whittle paused. They placed their implements into their lap, looking up with their head tilted slightly.

“And he wasn’t suitable company?” They questioned, wry mirth giving way to the subtle rasp in their voice.

Lucinian’s mouth tapped out, finally giving way to a smile and a single laugh. “He’s not really my type”.

“No?”

Lucinian raised his hands, “Keeps leaving me in cuffs”.

The second snippet reads:

“Ladies last”, she hummed in exaggerated politeness, gesturing down the hall with a hand. A thin, bony hand. Ashen finger tips.

“Of course”, Lucinian mimicked, recreating his mock bow, “my mistake… uhh”. He paused pointedly as his head was level with hers, turning to her with a blank face; an actor prompting for his forgotten line.

She squinted at him for a moment. The ginger strand was threatening to fall across her face again. He noticed some freckles from a glimpse of light. A nick on the top of her lip. Very old though.

Eyes locked on his, a slight smile returned to her face. “Viralin”, she declared.

Without missing a beat, Lucinian drew back from his show of a bow. “My mistake, Viralin”, he answered, dispensing with the theatrical manners. “Lucinian”, he continued, a slight nod toward her, “will lead the way”. He then made for the staircase with slow deliberate steps.

The third snippet reads:

“Witch”, echoed his voice in Lucinian’s memory. His brow furrowed.

He wasn’t unfamiliar with their lot. There was plenty of hearsay about a coven, or covens, that existed on Oriath but, much like many of the things running through the rumour mills of the city streets, almost all of it was barely, partially true. They were rumoured to use Thaumaturgy for their wicked ways, though even that much is hard to corroborate; it could have even been propaganda for all Lucinian was able to gather, given the Templar’s aggressive stance on the subject, likening it to corruption.

Rumours aside, what had Lucinian worried was why a suspected witch was on a ship with Templar. People accused of witchcraft or thaumaturgy were destined for a short drop and a sudden stop. If someone like her was amoungst the prisoners…

The fourth snippet reads:

The captain turned to him, triumphant smirk frozen on his face. Then his eyes slightly brightened.

“A deals’a deal, I’m afraid,” he replied mockingly, evoking a fresh thrash from the man, arms no less bloody. “Far lesser a sailor to break their word than hesitant to take a life”. Scattered “aye”s in approval as he paced toward the man, head lowering to watch his own step.

“And trust, we may not slit your throat ‘fore we drop you off, but…” Back against the railing, the injured man leaned his head back, fury and vigour snuffed by the captain’s approach, leaving only worry.

“There’s more than one way to scale a fish.” He stopped before one of the crew holding him up, a hollow chuckle muffled by his smile. The man cocked his head to a side, glancing at the crew supporting him.

The captain leaned toward him.

“Y’e’er poured salt on an open wound, lad?”
