Summary:
Ed surveys the collection that Stede's laid out on the chaise, steel and glass, polished wood and supple leather catching the preemptive candlelight and the last rays of the setting sun through the little window of Stede's auxiliary wardrobe. It's quiet in here; distant music and faint shouts drift on the wind from town, over the ever present shh-shh of the waves, but there's no crew footsteps overhead, no laughter or chatter or bickering from outside the captains' cabin. They've docked for the night and given the crew shore leave - save for Fang, who's on watch - and Ed and Stede have the night to themselves.

Stede's a chatty sort, and Ed wouldn't change him for the world - he's a talker himself - but it's something of a novelty to have him quiet now as Ed kneels on the rug to pull his glove back on and secure the ankle cuffs. He draws the moment out, sliding his hands up Stede's calves, brushing his cheek against Stede's knee just to feel the silk of the stockings on his skin, and looks up to see Stede watching him with a dazed, wondering look in his eyes. Stede's hair glints like gold in the candlelight, and Ed is hit with a sudden and powerful memory - a window in the church in his village, the one at the back by the pew where he and his mother always sat, the one bearing the image of Saint Sebastian, bound and serene in spite of the arrows sticking out of his bare chest and stomach. Ed had stared at that window every Sunday, sometimes throughout the whole sermon if his mother didn't notice and nudge him to pay attention.
When it wasn't raining, the sun would shine through that window and the beautiful, suffering saint would glow, lovely and helpless, just for Ed.
The moment stretches like toffee, Stede bound and glowing and looking at Ed like he hung the moon.
I love him.
