Yeah that's not what they're talking about in here. You can read it in that link there. It's just a snazzy headline because "Democrat DOGE" is memetic or whatever. I thought this was the book-learner website.
More than 4,000 people have submitted applications to join the New York City PIT crews, which will consist of five teams focusing on building services in-house instead of using contractors.

Triple tap: she concludes by saying that “stochastic parrot” is still an accurate and important term to hold to LLMs. Disrespectful to trot out Mitchell’s headline like this. Can’t tell if it’s motivated incompetence, or just the normal type.

On the one hand this description of an abusive sex-cult is horrific in its banal tone, but on the other hand, the author is identifying the one silver lining of the whole scenario as its main harm. If you walked away from the horrors, do not look back. Nothing there is good, especially the tech.

I forget who posted it but “they thought they discovered the atomic bomb, but they actually discovered the sandwich and opened one sandwich shop” really does capture the way these AI companies move.

There is an even more pernicious dynamic here that the recent drama highlights in particular: text interpolation like this relies on the density of work in the neighborhood of solutions. So these big prizes are getting solved because of the long history of research around them.
Every new advance in mathematics, whether it comes from technique, technology, or infrastructure (such as access to libraries of past literature) reduces the difficulty of solving problems. This is generally a good thing; but it comes at the cost of flattening out the difficulty landscape of a field, to the point where one can no longer discern its geometry to the extent that promising questions can be extracted within the range of applicability of the tool. Often this effect is counteracted by the ability of such a tool to enlarge the radius of the sphere of results one can plausibly reach, creating new boundaries to fruitfully explore.

Can we retroactively apply this designation to that stupid guess and check 4ct proof?
While it may be technically infeasible to completely prohibit the use of automated tools to perform indiscriminate solution extraction, I believe that we can still designate many classes of problems as being desirous of a careful analysis that not only solves the problem, but identifies insights from the solution process, and learn more about the difficulty landscape for nearby problems, and for which raw solutions without such analysis would be of negligible or even negative value for these purposes. This is analogous to how a modern food donation drive no longer accepts arbitrary contributions even when they are verified to be technically edible, but instead maintains explicit and socially accepted standards on what level of contributions are actually sought.

65% of businesses fail within 10 years. Roughly ~4% of the population are business owners, so about 1% of the population is getting railed in the free market at any given time. Top 1% of companies hold about 80% of total market share. A gamblers’ curve.
This is not a contemporary phenomenon. Harvard PhD student Spencer Yongwook Kwon, Chicago Booth’s Yueran Ma, and Leibniz Institute for Financial Research’s Kaspar Zimmermann find that the trend has been in place for a century. They calculate that since the 1930s, the share of the US economy dominated by the top 1 percent of companies (when sorted by assets) has increased to 90 percent, up from 70 percent. Meanwhile, the asset share of the top 0.1 percent of companies has risen to 88 percent, up from 47 percent

Besides the point but there’s something about this distribution: less than 1% account for over 50%. Call it “the gamblers’ curve,” the distribution of payouts in a casino. You’ll find it in any of the betting platforms. Same with loot boxes.
Screenshot of the quoted article reading:

The FEC donation records, cross-referenced with the L2 national voter file, reveal a similar but even more pronounced skew. Less than 1 percent of all Democratic donors account for almost half of the $1.4 billion raised by spam PACs since 2017. Put more precisely, roughly 138,000 donors averaging 75 years of age have each donated to these PACs one hundred times or more. I call them “captive spam donors.”

Very good article. I do wonder how the history of this lines up? There may have been some “civic minded” sponsors in this era, but from what I recall, baroque stuff was all about “exalting god” i.e. extending the rational foundations of the existing power structure. Not an expert though.

I’ve been fighting in a comment section for the past week with people telling me this is a viable business strategy for the Kentucky Fried Chicken corporation.
YouTube comment that reads: “they were smarter, they would have simultaneously bought out and closed down chicken suppliers around the United States to increase the price of chicken and either push consumers to the fake nuggets or increase their profit margins on real chicken.
