Jorros caught up to the group just as Zarla finished loading her crossbow with something that glowed faintly purple. He craned his neck to better see over her shoulder. The bolts were thicker than her usual, with glowing runes carved into the shafts.

“Standard ammo is for standard problems,” she said, catching his glance. “These are for demons.” She sounded almost fond as she said the last word. Her smile was the kind she usually had on when she made jokes she didn’t expect others to understand.

“Foggybug said demons were unlikely,” Jorros reminded her.

Zarla shrugged. “Foggybug is rather apt at making observations. Doesn’t mean they always come true.” She squinted her eyes, looked him up and down. “Aren’t you very excited to run into a demon yourself? Some of the more powerful ones offer interesting deals to mortals who really like magic.”

Chaos.

That was the only way Lysandras knew how to interpret it. Complete, glorious, terrifying chaos. The buildings were a jumble of architectural styles that had no business existing side by side: Myrieter stone houses with their distinctive arched windows stood shoulder-to-shoulder with timber constructions that looked vaguely Aranzan, which in turn leaned against painted houseboats tied permanently to docks, which shared space with structures that clearly belonged to no nation Lysandras recognized at all. There were domes and spires and flat roofs and curved roofs, walls of whitewash and ochre and bright, defiant blue.

Color exploded everywhere. Sails and awnings and laundry strung between buildings like festival bunting. Market stalls were well visible even from this distance, their goods creating patches of color that moved and shifted as crowds swarmed through them. So many people. More than Lysandras had ever seen in one place, even at court.

To Vezee, it was all the same. Gods were gods, and they did as gods did, and much as she would have loved to land in the middle of a legend in the making, the fewer divinities meddled in her life the better. *Those* legends never ended all that well for the main character.

The wolverine cub was investigating the far corner of the room, small nose twitching as it—she, he reminded himself, he'd determined last night it was definitely a she—snuffled along the base of the wardrobe. Out of the blue, she paused, ears flicking, then lunged at a shadow only to tumble sideways when her paws slipped on the polished floor. She righted herself with a grumble and, undeterred, resumed her exploration, tail bristling with exaggerated importance.

The Fallen Feathers made camp in the basin of a seasonal river, a day’s hard ride from the Scar Mire. This deep into summer, the water was long gone, leaving behind cracked clay, smooth stones shaped like knucklebones, and a faint sulfur smell nobody commented on. There was a cold spring hidden in the tall yellow grass nearby, but it flowed mostly back down under the ground, save for a single thin stream that dried up before it reached the basin’s proper. The entire place felt temporary and unstable: here when the rains come, a ruin the rest of the time.

Jorros liked it just fine.

#WIPSnip #WritingCommunity #WriteSky The word "signal" technically isn't present, but signals are described.
There was a lot less intimacy in keeping watch together than ballads and tales suggested, Villa discovered at once. She and Ger sat on opposite sides of the campsite, maintaining visibility in all directions. Keeping quiet was paramount for everyone's safety, as Happy had quite ferociously reminded them before going to sleep, so they were only allowed to communicate through a system of small sounds—three clicks of the tongue meant “all clear,” two soft whistles meant “movement spotted.”

“There you are!” Foggybugg waved the bottle with such vigor, a few droplets of peer wine escaped and sizzled on the edge of the campfire. “Is our latest contract all set?”

“Our *last* contract,” Lovitto reminded him, sliding none too gracefully off the giant stallion’s back. He walked to the campfire, already unfastening a hefty-looking leather tube from his belt. Jorros etinguished his flames and stood to join the others, too.

The tube was sealed with blue wax—the kind that usually indicated guild work, or noble-sponsored work, or work that paid too much for what it claimed to be.

“Ooh,” Foggy said, when Lovitto tossed it onto the ground like a gauntlet. “Fancy.”

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity The word itself isn't there, but the snippet does describe the exterior of a place. 🏚️
All too soon, he saw the Willow looming ahead, wooden walls bleached gray by weather and neglect. The sign—a carved willow branch swaying over a crescent moon—hung motionless despite the light wind, as if the air itself had second thoughts about touching it.

Jorros dismounted slowly, boots sinking into the overgrown path. The air shimmered with something much colder than the residual heat of the day. The inn’s magic prickled against his skin like a cat assessing a stranger’s scent. Jorros assessed it right back.

Damp wood. Old spells gone musty at the edges. Beneath it, the faint, stubborn sweetness of valerian fighting through the tangle of weeds choking the garden out front. Vines twitched as he passed, thorns catching on his cloak as if to test his resolve.

Once all the ingredients were gathered in one pot and left to bubble for a bit, Rennas moved to the cupboard to pull down some bowls. He laid them out on the table: one for him, one for each of the twins, one for Stana, a smaller one for Shen, and one for Venneth, just in case. Six. Then his hand reached for a seventh, a familiar floral-painted bowl. He paused, his fingers hovering over the smooth ceramic. Villia wouldn't be here. She was at Olla’s, in their own home, probably eating something far more sophisticated than potato stew. He slid the bowl back onto the shelf with a quiet click.

It had taken him over three months to stop setting the table for Mattas when he'd taken up the job as a caravan guard. With Villia, it had been less than two since her wedding. He was doing just fine.

“Grandpa says everyone who washes up on Oskola ends up doing the dishes in one of the taverns first.”

“Does he?” Lys knew next to nothing about doing the dishes. He supposed it involved water.

The child nodded vigorously. “He says it’s a good thing, too.”

“Well. I suppose your grandfather knows best,” Lys said, a tad weakly. He debated asking how many new arrivals that unknown man had spent time with and if there were any contesting perspectives, then decided it would be decidedly stupid under the circumstances. Especially since the child appeared to get distracted, watching the pile of kids in the corner. The string game had clearly reached some kind of climax; there was a small cheer, and then the little ones picked up the string and began again.

The knocker was shaped like a puppy’s face, and it twitched its nose before Ren’s hand even made contact with the metal. The door unlatched at once with a soft, welcoming click. True, it was a little sluggish as it swung open in front of him, the sound coming from the hinges just this side of exhausted. But it was acting like a door in a living home should, and Rennas petted the sun-warmed wood gently before stepping through.

“Thank you for holding up for her, buddy,” he whispered.

The house around him creaked.

Lys sat in bed, his feet tucked under the quilt for some useless comfort, and tried to breathe the way he’d done before final exams, important court functions, and conversations with his mother. The dream was fading from his mind, leaving faint impressions behind: water like bruises, bottomless depths turning into a twisted mirror, a low hum that made his bones vibrate, all those teeth. Perfectly normal nightmare fare. Appropriate, even, for a situation of express uncertainty, for having just made a voyage across the sea. People who feel like they’re drowning emotionally constantly drown in their dreams. There are books about it.

"Land ho!" The cry came from the rigging, high and excited. "Dragons off the port bow!"

Lysandras's first thought was that it was a stupid joke. A sailor's prank at the expense of the sheltered nobleman. He almost laughed, almost made some loud remark about imaginary beasts—

And then there they were.

They came from below, exploding through the water in showers of spray that caught the sunlight in rainbow arcs. For a moment, they were nothing but confusion—flash of scale, curve of wing, gust of air going against the wind. Then they resolved into forms, and Lysandras’s heart made such a hard jolt his esophagus spasmed.

They sat together as the stars wheeled overhead, and Villa tried not to think about memories and hopes and choices. In fact, she tried her very best not to think at all. Instead, she snuggled into Ger's arms and focused on his heartbeat beneath her ear, the gentle lap of water against shore, the peaceful rustle of grass in a soft desert wind.

Everything terrible and complex in the world would still be there tomorrow, she figured.

Tonight, she could just be Villa.

Veliesh made a soft noise of protest. “I don’t think it’s fair to lump my reaction to them together with whatever’s going on with the townsfolk. I don’t get aggressive when there’s an imp nearby, or urge any children to hug it.” He paused and shot a panicked sidelong glance at Rinouk. “I don’t, do I?”

Bariq leaned forward a fraction, increasingly resembling a beast half-inch away from lunging. “You don’t even remember what goes on with you when one is around?”

“Well, aren't you in luck! There's a great carpenter in town. Rennas Kittentrue!” Jorros's brain froze at the sound of that name; his stomach dropped. The woman winked and smiled and carried on as if she noticed nothing, so perhaps his self-control and stealth skills were slightly better than some of his old friends had led him to believe. “He’s the reason half this town still stands, you know? Keeps up the roofs, fixes the carts, makes beds for newlyweds... You'd be hard-pressed to find one as reliable as our Ren anywhere, I'm telling you, sweetheart. Must be all that raising five siblings practically single-handed that he's done.” She leaned forward conspiratorially, lowering her voice. “You ask me, he deserves a medal—or at least a decent meal without having to cook it himself once in a while.”

Inside, the air was thick with the smells of ink, paint, and sweets. The wide corridor had multiple doorways on each side, but no actual doors. Children sat in clusters, some cross-legged on mats, others perched on stools, their ages as mixed as the subjects they studied. A girl no older than ten coaxed a tendril of mist from her palm, her tongue stuck out in concentration, while a boy beside her sketched sigils in a large album with crayons. Ghaiwar’s stomach twisted. Magic was a weapon, not a parlor trick for children to enjoy.

The sun had only barely grazed the horizon, and the exhaustion in Rennas’s bones was already threatening to put him into the earth. He was sitting by the pond in the woods, chewing on a stem of grass and staring at the opposite shore where a brook fed into the still waters with a gurgling whisper. It was a strange thing to envy the pond: how it didn’t have to do anything, ever, how it was allowed to simply exist there in the shade of the trees, and fresh energy flowed into it constantly through no effort on its own part.

Must be pleasant, being a pond.

The living room was, unfortunately, a disaster of slightly more epic proportions than Nomar had hoped to see. Half-empty wine bottles littered the place, and the sour scent rising from them mingled uncomfortably with the metallic, burnt-copper odor of recent Sun-communion. A map of Swallow’s Nest was pinned with a Shard-dagger to the back of the plush red sofa, and on the low table in front of it, Glanna Neverie’s hostage dossier lay open, annotated in Erkhan’s frantic script.

If she hadn’t already known the caves were considered sacred, she’d learn it now. The entrances to each of these natural formations were draped with offerings: flowers, stones, small carved figures. But as they approached the largest of the four, Villa noticed something that didn't fit: faint footprints in the sandy floor, leading inside.

"Someone's definitely been hiding here," Hort said quietly. His hand rested on the hilt of his knife.

Briefly, he entertained the idea of catching a bit more sleep, then discarded it as functionally impossible. Instead, he dedicated his time to taking care of his appearance: smoothing down his waistcoat, washing a tiny mustard stain from his shirt’s sleeve, brushing his hair. All the while he kept idly wondering why he even bothered. There were no fellow courtiers to impress anymore. No one who would care if his cuffs were straight or if the curve of his smile suited the occasion.

Still, the ritual comforted him, the familiar motions of self-construction. Maybe now he was his own audience.

The creature crouched on top of the row of wooden boards was the size of a toddler, give or take, except it was way creepier than all the toddlers Vezee had ever met combined. It resembled an oversized toad, with haunches like coiled springs and warty, brownish-olive skin glistening with a mucous sheen. Its head was too big for its awkward body, adorned with misshapen floppy ears and three neat rows of horns, each pair smaller than the one in front of it.

And then there were all the fucking eyes. Some golden, some red, some a dark phosphorescent green, blinking out of sync, covering the entirety of the gross thing. Most of them were focused on the party, or rather, on some specific point in their midst.

Furball padded over to investigate Cassel's boots. It took her hardly twenty seconds of thorough sniffing to sneeze, chirp, and reach up, pressing her front paws against Cassel's calf. “Oskola doesn't do charity,” Nerida continued, “but it does trade. You work, you eat, you have a place. Simple. There's always something to occupy willing hands—dock crews, fish markets, the spellcraft research collective if you've got a head for that kind of thing. Or you can always starve. Your choice.”

Lysandras kind of wished she spoke with a crueler inclination. He knew how to handle grouchy vipers looking to make him bad about himself. He had no idea what to do when someone was simply stating facts, the way one might explain weather or tides, and the facts were so alien to his entire lived experience.

In the spring, the Wasteland bled with roses. The flowers had been teasing their presence for days, red nubs too small amidst the thorns and the lifeless leaves to be seen from the distance, yet strong enough for the wind to carry their scent for miles. And now they had turned to full bloom overnight, carpeting the grey rocks and dust plains in lush, solid redness as far as the eye could see.

She followed his gesture with her eyes, stared blindly at the purple-tinted river for half a second, then her eyes darted to that waterskin at his belt again. She shook her head.
