My colleagues and I are bringing forward a resolution calling on Minneapolis Public Schools to delay the vote on their plan that will close 16 schools across the city, including Field Elementary. This plan will be really destabilizing for our communities. MPS do the right thing!

This raid is an escalation of a decade-long campaign of attacks against her by Trump and is a clear abuse of power. No president should use the power of the federal government to threaten, silence, or intimidate political opponents. Here in Minnesota and in Minneapolis we stand with Ilhan!

It’s outrageous and unacceptable that Trump weaponized the DOJ to raid Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home. I stand with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and against Trump as he illegally and immorally targets her.

It’s abundantly clear that Ward 8 does not want data centers in our city, and that we share deep concerns with the rush to develop these new facilities without the information and regulatory power from state-level government that we need.

Ensuring that kids can safely get to school, no matter how your kids travel, is one of the most basic functions of the City. I’m committed to continually improving that safety!

Yesterday I joined families from Field elementary at their “school street” biking and walking to school. It was fun to celebrate school and safely getting to school by walking and biking together!

I want to acknowledge that this was an extremely frightening incident for neighbors in the area. I am in communication with MPD about this and will be following up to learn more information. Please do not hesitate to reach out to my office with any questions or concerns about what happened.

When I talk about OUR community, that includes Somali neighbors. There is no us and them, just us.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 09/10/2026
To our Somali neighbors: know that you are loved, we are so happy you are here, we love being in community with you, we will stand with you against this horrific hate, and we will not tolerate violence and harm brought against you.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 09/10/2026
Here in Ward 8 we love our Somali neighbors and know they make our communities and neighborhoods the unique and vibrant places they are. I will continue to work alongside Somali community leaders to fight for their, and everyone in our city’s, safety and ability to thrive.

I am at a loss for words for the hate and vitriol that Trump is showing our Somali neighbors. It fills me with anger and heartbreak to hear our precious community members described this way and to see the highest office of government in our country openly invite and instigate violence on them.

I am frustrated by this decision, but I look forward to working with my colleagues to keep exploring how we can protect workers and public safety by regulating AVs in Minneapolis. We will not give up on the job and overall safety of our neighbors.
010
Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 06/10/2026
Unfortunately, Mayor Frey chose to veto this initiative and leave workers at risk from these unregulated big tech AV companies.
111
Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 06/10/2026
I was also proud to support this important initiative because more cars and congestion will not lead to safer streets, and protecting workers is non-negotiable.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 06/10/2026
About 10,000 rideshare drivers work in Minneapolis, most of whom are workers of color and immigrants according to the MN Department of Labor and Industry, and AVs pose a risk to all of their jobs.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 06/10/2026
My colleagues introduced this crucial legislation to protect workers and the public from the risks that commercial AVs pose, in particular the risk of job loss.

I have heard your concerns with the presence of this technology in our city loud and clear. I hope that the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the U of M do the right thing by ending their contracts with Flock Safety, and I will continue to work on ways to regulate this technology in our city.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 02/10/2026
These devices can threaten the safety and privacy of our residents, which has led a number of Minnesota jurisdictions—including Duluth, Isanti County, Sherburne County, West St. Paul, Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Park, Shorewood, and Saint Paul—to end or pause their use of Flock Safety technology.

While the City of Minneapolis does not own, operate, or contract for Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, both the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the University of Minnesota have deployed Flock Safety ALPR cameras in Minneapolis.

“Regardless of any future amendments, the city has a responsibility to act now to protect workers and the public. Big Tech companies are well known for taking advantage of regulatory voids to expand their profits. Workers Drive Minneapolis puts our city, not Silicon Valley, in the driver’s seat”

Minneapolis residents work hard while property taxes keep increasing, it’s the City’s responsibility to make sure our tax dollars are spent and managed well.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 22/09/2026
We must contend with the reality that without meaningful reform to the MPD and the needed financial oversight of the department, we will continue to see budget shortfalls and property taxes will continue to go up as a result.
100
Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 22/09/2026
This pattern is resulting in massive overspending by the department and significant budget shortfalls for the City.

I urge the MPS board to delay the vote on this proposal and extend the period for community engagement and work with students, families and educators toward a proposal that works for everyone.
021
Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 21/09/2026
And especially concerned that this plan is being rushed forward with very little opportunity for public comment. This process will lead to even more instability for our communities that have already been under attack and faced a lot of instability this year.

Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 21/09/2026
I have been hearing from parents, families and educators in Ward 8 about how difficult and destabilizing the planned school closures by Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) will be. I am very concerned about the proposal to close 16 schools (including Field Elementary)
194
Soren Stevenson - Minneapolis Ward 8 @ward8.minneapolismn.gov · 17/09/2026
I hope to participate in the engagement around MPS’ plans and connect with Ward 8 families about what this could mean for our communities and the powerful legacy of the Black community in South Minneapolis.
