Thanks to our generous Lumberjill Benefactor @jenkatwrites.bsky.social a War Birds Kiva Loan has been sent to Amal - a sewist and Syrian refugee sheltering in Jordan. Because of good timing we were able to get a Kiva partner to double the impact of Jen's generosity! www.kiva.org/lend/2857503

Can you help support Amal?

Kiva is a loan, not a donation. With Kiva you can lend as little as $25 and make a big change in someone's life.

So yesterday I talked about racial diversity in Lumberjills, and today I'm doing a thread on telling queer stories with the game. First we need to talk about history games vs. historical fantasy games. A very long 🧵...

The awesome @genesisoflegend.bsky.social started a thread a few days ago to dig into why Lumberjills might not be funding as fast as expected. Somebody mentioned that the campaign read as offputtingly white and heteronormative - so I wanted to talk about that.

And of course, this wouldn't be a War Birds game if we didn't point out that in Scotland there was a wide variety of women hard at work doing home front service alongside the Lumberjills.

@widdledragon.bsky.social has come up with the most delightfully nerdy concept: fanart of characters she's played (or designed) from other games who are getting their romance on by playing the Lumberjills larp! I love it, it's rpgs all the way down.

Want to read about the Lumberjills? They are fascinating and the NYT wrote a great article about them. www.nytimes.com/2019/03/20/w... If only there was a indie 4-person larp currently kickstarting about them.

One of the reasons Canadian designer Moyra Turkington was excited to write Lumberjills was because of the Canadian connection! Many Lumberjills found futures in Canada as War Brides after falling in love with Canadian men in the lumber camp dances. Let's talk about The Sawdust Fusiliers!

In 2014, while planning the War Birds anthology, I came across this image of Cicely Clark 😍💜✨and immediately fell in love with the Women's Timber Corps. There was almost no info accessible about them back then. 🧵 www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-...

One of the joys of doing a crowdfunding campaign is reading the testimonials of your past playtesters, and getting to reminisce over specific runs of the game. This run was unique and delightful in many ways!

Today's one thing about Lumberjills: It's a game that challenges the notion that conflict & scarcity is the best/only way to create fruitful narrative tension in rpgs. Instead, abundance, scaffolded support & the promise of success invites players to find it in their choices.
