One of the best parts of my job is sharing history in public talks. I have been fortunate to teach on the streets of Boston and Washington, battlefields, the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I got to speak on the Cumbres and Toltec RR for the Colorado 150. Such great and engaged riders that day.

On this day in 1914 the world changed in a flash when Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. I was fortunate to visit the site in 2022. For me, at some historical sites you can feel the weight of history to a greater extent and this is one of them.

In the 80s I hung out with people who were James Dobson fans. Not my jam, but it seemed benign. Then I saw a ton of trauma coming out after he died yesterday, recalling physical beatings as a result of his promotion of corporal punishment. So disturbing.

This weeks marks 35 years since our first date in Gainesville, Florida. We married in New Mexico, lived in Nebraska and Montana, and settled in Colorado. Two great kids, a perfect son in law, and two wonderful grand kids later and here we are.

#snl50 is a mixed bag, but that is the story of the show. It certainly captures the zeitgeist with lots of shots on Trump. I find the special a bit disappointing but it does remind me of a lot of great moments from my middle school years with the original cast.

Here’s the thing. Every one of these people in tears heard Trump on the stump before Nov. They knew he was cruel. But they were fine with it, thinking he’d only hurt the people they didn’t like. The problem with cruelty—It spreads. You don’t get to control it. Sooner or later, it comes for you too.

Joe Biden worked his magic with Trump’s unemployment rate. Trump isn’t interested in keeping people employed. He’s fired over 100,000 workers, and his tariffs will mean millions will lose their jobs. I hope those that didn’t vote know what they did to the rest of us!

I lost my close friend of 25 years today. Dr. Ed Crowther hired me at ASU and was my chair and mentor until he retired in 2018. Check out his edited book, The Enduring Lost Cause: Afterlives of a Redeemer Nation (U. Of Tenn. Press, 2020). A great professor who impacted thousands of students.
