Oh I could see that! In this case it's actually for visualizing the sections of debris around the planet, so they can be loaded/unloaded as needed for the player. Normally we wouldn't be this far out but this was also mid making the planet size adjustable and we thought it looked cool!

Thanks! This was actually for our writing specifically, so we used Obsidian with the Extended Graph plug-in to replay our node setup, then recorded the time-lapse with OBS. We've used gource a little in the distant past, but not recently and aren't familiar with any similar tools, unfortunately.
