“Hundreds of Beavers” cost $150,000 to make, and earned a 1000% return on investment.

I wrote on October 7, 2023 — the day of the Hamas attack, with Israel’s bombs already falling on Gaza — that Israel was going to commit a genocide. That took no prophecy, only a willingness to believe what Israel had told us about itself for years: a state that had sealed two million people inside Gaza since 2007 and rationed the calories it let through the gates; that called its serial assaults on that caged population “mowing the grass”; that built a doctrine, named for the Beirut suburb it leveled in 2006, around the deliberate destruction of the civilian world around its enemy; and now a government whose ministers announced, without euphemism, what they meant to do. The genocide was the logical end of everything Israel had shown us it believed about the people it had caged.

The USA as a nation is fundamentally defined by murderous white supremacy and the ruthless exploitation of poverty. Always has been, always will be.

Cuffay spent the rest of his life in Tasmania. Before his arrival, his name was well-known to many Australians, because a number of reports on his trial in British newspapers were reprinted in the Australian press. When he landed on 29 November 1849, his arrival was reported in several newspapers, including The Courier in Hobart.[22]

Though he was pardoned three years after his conviction, Cuffay elected to stay in Tasmania, working as a tailor and involving himself in local politics. In 1851, Cuffay was involved in a "public meeting of the free trade unions", to further the aims of the Anti-Transportation League, and to stop the use of convict labour in public works. Cuffay campaigned against the Master and Servant Act in England, and continued that activism in Australia.[23]

In the early 1850s, Mary Cuffee applied for financing to enable her to travel to Tasmania, and join her husband, which she did in 1853.[24]

Cuffay's transportation to Australia did not end his political activity. He continued to organise and agitate for democratic rights in Tasmania.[25]

Morning Merlin. That European Goldfinch seems rather unlikely. Probably something local with a similar call.

I managed to (temporarily) break my bandsaw this week. I was using it to sharpen garden stakes when a tiny wedge of scrap got itself jammed between the blade and the guides. Instantly halted the blade, which in turn stretched the tyre on the drive wheel. New tyres are easy to get, fortunately.
