we highlighted Cassidy as the epitome of GOP fear of Trump in his second term. this essay is more sympathetic to him than we are — he very much dug his own political grave, and abandoned his principles only to likely lose his seat anyhow

@wallstmain.bsky.social tries to explain why the right has a point about political violence and why the temperature needs to come down, only to prove why we all need to take a step back:

Respectfully, in 2023, Amazon paid $11.2 billion in taxes (worldwide, but a good chunk in the U.S.) and $12.3B in 2024. You can argue it should be higher (I would not), but it's not zero or close

Even considering lower wages overseas (where presumably most of these scams originate), $470 million hardly seems like anywhere near enough to support the output this industry creates

so many things like this have happened in the last decade, and so steadily, that we miss how fucked up they are. he's not wrong: there is a "meme coin industry" which is just...inexplicable? insane? horrifying? hilarious? all of the above I guess

It really is wild: he went bankrupt in full public view. And he never really established a business in the 25 years after. The number of Americans who believe he was a success in business is pretty astonishing

not sure your example quite works - the *model* isn't regulated now, but rather the net impact of its output is. don't read that passage as regulators can't "dispute its conclusions" - it's not an assertion that the models are infallible. It's just avoiding a patchwork of state/local AI laws

if you're wondering if this is part of an evil plot, bear in mind that Trump Media — in which Donald Trump has an ownership stake currently worth ~$3B — has an equally incompetent leadership team (former GOP Rep. Devin Nunes is the CEO, for starters).
