I love White-browed Scrubwrens. They are so Small but their personalities are Big. #ausbirds
This is a picture of damp soil in the forest. There’s some little plants, adorned with dewdrops. Also there’s a bird. It’s mostly brown, with a grey head and fabulous white eyebrows.

I've apparently reached the stage of my life where being invited to go to a sewerage treatment plant to look at waterfowl is genuinely my idea of a great social outing. RIP to my youth I guess. Anyway, here's a bunch of (mostly) ducks. #birding #ausbirds
This is a picture of a lot of ducks on a mud bank. More ducks, mostly Australasian Shovellers, this time swimming. There's one on the far right that's got some incredible eyeliner going on, he's probably going to join some kind of emo band.

Our local quoll showed up again and this time I actually managed to get a decent picture. This might be the best thing that has ever happened to me. #auswildlife #wildoz #marsupial #mammal
A spotted-tail quoll, alert and facing the camera. It is standing on a cut log.

Please enjoy my ugly gremlin babies. They are Noisy Friarbirds so this look isn’t really going to get much better. #ausbirds #wildliferehab
Two baby birds that are mostly feathered, except for their bald heads. They are in a fabric nest. One is shouting for food, which is activity they engage in approximately every 5 minutes.

Nankeen Night-Heron showed up on our dam last week, which was very nice of since I got to record it in my #AussieBirdCount surveys. Doesn’t like having its photo taken, but I finally got it! #ausbirds
A bird with a chest back, white belly and black-capped head. It has a yellow eye and black bill, and it looks slightly alarmed. It is standing amongst reeds and other pond vegetation.

My children have set up a box from which to spy on the brown cuckoo-doves. The cuckoo-doves are suspicious of the giggling box but not enough to pass up the offer of seeds.
A cardboard box with a hole cut in the bottom. A child’s nose and glasses are visible peeking through the hole. On top of the box is a brown cuckoo-dove, and another stands in front of the box. Occasionally the doves slap each other (not pictured) which is hilarious, according to the box-dwellers.

Succeeded at my Snipe hunt today ✅ #ausbirds
A Latham’s Snipe, that is, by some miracle, not flying away so the only picture I get is a vague brown blur. It is wading through a grassy bit of wetland. Not pictured: the other four Latham’s Snipes I saw today, who all bailed out before I’d even lifted the camera.

Some releases are exciting and beautiful celebrations of freedom, as the animal flies/hops/runs away from us. Echidna releases are…. not like that. Safe travels little one! #wildliferehab #auswildlife

Female Scarlet Myzomela - they look so delicate. #ausbirds
A small brown honeyeater with red cheeks in a tree full of red flowers. If you look closely you might also notice a Silvereye lurking in the background.

A great day of birding for #OctoberBigDay - we finished with 86 species, 3 lifers for me, and a sunburn because I forgot to pack sunscreen. #ausbirds #ebird

Gotcha! The Emu-wren decided to play nice today and let me take a picture. There were a pair actually, it was a great day for birding. #ausbirds #wildoz

They are a cat-sized carnivorous marsupial. Vulnerable species - seeing one in the wild is an incredible treat.

Oh these are wonderful! We don’t really have fences so I usually set my camera traps on animals trails. Mostly I get lots of brush turkeys, lyrebirds, wombats and wallabies. Quoll has been the bucket list animal!

We've lived on this property for 13 years and I've been trying to catch a quoll on my trail cams basically since we moved in. Never seen one. But today one turned up and tried to break into the (fortunately secure) aviary. This is the most exciting thing ever. #wildoz #ausmammals

It started pouring with rain on our walk yesterday. Anyway fun fact turns out pelicans drink rainwater by just sitting there with their bills open. They even moved to align themselves with the direction the rain was coming in. So that's cool. #ausbirds #wildoz #pelican

Yeah when I spotted this one I saw a dozen males but only two females, I do wonder how many more females were present but hiding too well for me to see.
010
Kell @wallaboo.bsky.social · 12/08/2025
He does! Though personally I think a better name could have been chosen, since you don't see the red rump from most angles. (And the poor female gets saddled with a name for a feature she doesn't have.)
A small parrot walking through the grass. He has a green head, yellow belly, turquoise wings and a barely visible red rump.

The way rails flick their tails while foraging is the cutest. (Buff-banded Rail) #ausbirds #wildoz

This shade of blue. 👌 Male Variegated Fairywren. #ausbirds #wildoz

My seven year old described Royal Spoonbills as having a mullet and now I can't unsee it. #ausbirds #wildoz
A very handsome white bird with a black spoon-shaped bill and yellow eyebrows. And yes, a plume of feathers at the back of the head that could, perhaps, be called a mullet. The same bird, with its beak in puddle splashing about.

Female King Parrot, blending in. #ausbirds
A green bird with a red belly, in a tree with pink berries. If it weren't for the red tum, it would have been very hard to spot as her head is the same colour as the leaves surrounding her.

This isn't a good photo but I'm ridiculously excited to have seen my first Southern Emu-wren today. #ausbirds #wildoz
Mostly this picture looks like a mess of dry grass growing alongside a star picket. However if you look very closely there's a small bird behind the grass. Not pictured: the 13 other shots where I missed the bird entirely.
