This early 20th century commercial souvenir postcard documents the Juri Uma (also known in the Okinawan language as Umagaa, or "Horse Dance"), a celebrated folk ritual traditionally performed by the Juri (Okinawan courtesans and female performing artists)
Two young women stand side-by-side in a stately studio pose against a warm, sun-yellow backdrop, their bodies angled in synchronized grace. Each dancer holds a carved wooden hobby-horse head (uma-gashira) at her waist, framed by patterned fabric reins draped over her arms to imitate the bridle of a galloping steed. They are clad in traditional Okinawan robes (ryūso), featuring bold bingata stencil-dyed textiles—the left dancer in slate-blue adorned with iris and plum blossoms, and the right in deep indigo emblazoned with gold-tinged grasses and floral sprays. Their dark hair is swept up into high, traditional Ryukyuan topknots (kampan), bound at the forehead with soft folded cloth headbands (hachimaki) in rose-pink and pale grey. Captured in the soft, hand-tinted tones of a pre-WW2 halftone postcard, the image radiates a tactile, vintage nostalgia, evoking the rhythmic sound of wooden props, the twang of the three-stringed sanshin, and the festive atmosphere of island celebration.
This commercial souvenir postcard documents the Juri Uma (also known in the Okinawan language as Umagaa, or "Horse Dance"), a celebrated folk ritual traditionally performed by the Juri (Okinawan courtesans and female performing artists) of Naha's famous Tsuji district. Held annually on the twentieth day of the first lunar month, the festival featured Juri dressed in brilliant bingata garments parading through the streets with wooden horse props, dancing and mimicking a galloping motion to pray for agricultural bounty, commercial prosperity, and peace. Far beyond mere entertainers, the Juri were vital custodians of Ryukyuan classical music, dance, and diplomatic etiquette. The vibrant robes they wear represent the pinnacle of Okinawan textile monozukuri (artisanal mastery), utilizing indigenous stencil-dyeing techniques (bingata) that blend tropical color palettes with motifs influenced by Chinese and Southeast Asian trade networks.

For years the Pentagon has been redirecting funds that were allocated for the replacement and repair of barracks. These funds were instead used for training missions for border control. The DOD picked it's priority, deal with it. Don't ask taxpayers for more money. share.google/YUqAZMunzevg...

50 years ago this summer, 4 teenagers and their fathers spent 2 weeks hiking in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. We hiked sections of the Continental Divide Trail, crossed the upper headwaters of the Flathead River and hunted trilobites in the shadow of Trilobite Peak. Fabulous memories.

I was at the local brewery today and they had a barrel aged stout available in cans. They haven't had their 369 stout for awhile, so lets try it. It's a great aged stout, not as strong as an imperial stout, it doesn't have that sharp whiskey taste. Another fine beer from our local brewery.
