B. The West Syrian-Byzantine Office

…

The cycle of eight daily prayer offices in the Byzantine Rite consists of the following:

Vespers (at sundown)
Compline (before sleep)
The Midnight Office (chanted in the middle of the night or early in the morning)
Matins (the longest of the day, which traditionally ends as the sun is rising)
First Hour (chanted at the rising of the sun)
Third Hour (chanted at the third hour of the day—approximately 9:00 AM)
Sixth Hour (chanted at noon)
Ninth Hour (chanted at the ninth hour of the day—approximately 3:00 PM

On the great feasts of the liturgical year as well as on certain feast days (and in the Slavic tradition, on every Saturday night) there is a particularly solemn service called the All-Night Vigil that combines Vespers, Matins and First Hour, with special additions, into a single long service. This office has become known in the West through Sergei Rachmaninov's ethereal choral masterpiece All-Night Vigil.

The Byzantine Vespers in particular shows the merger of cathedral and monastic elements. At its heart is a lucernarium, Vespers psalms (140, 141, 129, 116) with incensation, three readings, a litany, and blessing, to which monastic psalmody has been prefixed. The presidential prayers now bunched at the beginning of both Vespers and Orthros (Matins) were once scattered throughout the offices. The dangling doxologies that are now scattered throughout indicate the original places of these collects. The present Orthros or Matins is a compilation of four separate offices: the royal office (a brief service for the emperor celebrated in imperial monastic foundations, but really unrelated to the time of Matins), monastic nocturns, the cathedral vigil, and the morning office, which includes Lauds.

1. FOR THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Yesterday, just before a cold got the best of me, I helped finishing a Christmas gift to my son from his aunt: a medieval wheeled cannon that shoots ping-pong balls. A very interesting wooden project. The smallest pieces were 2x2x5mm, 5/64 by 5/64 by 13/64 inches. Now my home is being “canonized!” 😇

Supper at Emmaus (Cena in Emmaus), 1601, by Caravaggio.

The artist aptly portrays the man in the center beardless, and as one recognizes the man is Jesus breaking the bread, one is in effect participating in the revealing as in Luke 24:13-35.

Interesting! The Harrowing of Hades suggests that the gates (of hell) have been broken by Jesus from outside, as He has conquered death. Now, as one is regenerated, we could say our bondage (our gates) is broken by the Holy Spirit from inside. This is my non-scholar, still-learning, understanding.

The First Sunday in Advent

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Earliest known depiction of a child helping her grandmother find the new WiFi printer, circa 100 BC, Getty Villa. www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
Grave Naiskos of an Enthroned Woman with an Attendant, circa 100 BC.

Alternate Title: Gravestone of a Woman with Her Attendant.

On this funerary marble relief, a woman reaches out to lift the lid of a thin box held by an attendant. She sits on an elaborate, high-backed chair with a turned leg decorated with lions' paws and an arm support in the form of an eagle. She also wears snake bracelets, presumably gold, on her upper and lower arms.

The thin open box held by the attendant raises several questions. The two holes apparent on its base are evidence of an ancient repair, perhaps in the form of two metal pins intended to hold a now lost marble component in place.

On view at Getty Villa, Gallery 111, The Hellenistic World.
