Maybe "superheroes in general"? I'm taking a wild swing here. "When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, You can head off a balanced attack!"

There was a long tradition of soft core movies that were "just off-brand"--or in the case of "Alice in Wonderland (the 1976 version) not really off by much at all. So maybe her suspicions weren't correct, but they weren't groundless.

Weird. I can access B-sky on my phone, but on my computer the page insists no such account exists.

But... ...wouldn't water pool in the bottom of the loop, effectively braking your movement and cause drowning?

Spooky bird stories. My Halloween comic from 2024.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??" In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!". In panel 3, A screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!". In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".

That's a good one. If I leave seasonal movies off, first place for me is probably Casablanca. I'm a sucker for Claude Rains in that movie, he's just brilliant.

What movie that came out before I was born that I’ve watched the most times? A Christmas Carol, on Christmas Eve over 40 years in a row.

He sort of Alan Scott-ed* (Alan predates all the Hal+ lore that would follow, but he's definitely an independent Earth-focused Green Lantern). *Sort of, because he made a choice, whereas Alan just arrives there by virtue of comics history.

Colosseum (Wolfgang Kramer, Markus Lübke) A fun little auction game where each player puts on public events. Would play again if asked, probably wouldn't request it. (I won Teothuacan and Colosseum),

#boardgames Saturday. All 3-player. New York City (Stefan Feld): Nice area control/auction game. A ton of fun, want to play again. Teotihuacan: City of Gods (Daniele Tascini) There's a lot going on in this game, but once you've figured it out a bit, it's smooth and fast. Definitely a play-again.

I read it in High School, so about 45 years ago or so? Perhaps it's telling: I can summarize several Witch World novels, or Star Ranger (my favourite AN, probably)--I can even describe Quag Keep, my least favourite AN novel. But this one? I don't remember anything.

I believe the ammo supply dwindled to the point where they were finally removed from avalanche duty in the Cdn Rockies.

Canadians still use the Carl Gustav as a man-portable infantry platoon anti-tank weapon. But we don't call it an RR, even if it is one. But the 75 and 106mm RRs are really only crew-portable (it took four of us to wrestle one from ground-mount to it's place on the jeep (Cdn 106 crew in picture).

Years ago we used to go to Sunday Gamer's Breakfast, then back to my place to play on Sunday afternoon. The group has scattered now, still connected by technology, and Sunday afternoons have been my sweet spot for about 40 years. (Before that I was in High School, and all times were the best).

I love the set-up. We rode a drilling machine into the earth, fled from Ape and Tiger-people, smashed some Nazis, and escaped in a stolen U-boat. The simple die-pool system is a bit quirky: the more damage something does the more likely it is to hit. But it's not bad.

In the 1950s recoilless "rifles" like this were all the rage (and they had 57mm and this 75mm version). Canada still used the 106 mm* RR from the Korean War until the mid-80s (I was even trained on them), then they had a post-service carrier in Rocky Mtn avalanche protection. *Not on a scooter.

History study is a *very* multi-discipline pursuit, I think. Anthropology, engineering, linguistics, agricultural sciences--I'm not saying a historian is an expert in any other field, but "history" never happens in isolation.

Similar. It’s been decades since I’ve listened to the radio. My various internet music algorithms are all tweaked to my existing musical tastes, and although a new artist (to me) sneaks in occasionally, they’re generally a 60’s-90’s band.

...in close to 3 hours, but we pursued "total" victory and it was about 4 1/2 hours, including a break for lunch, etc. Super glad to get it to the table for a three player game, my first time not playing solo. But it's not a weeknight game at all.

Had a great time today at Garden City Board Game Day #boardgames Game 1 was El Grande, one of the first area control games (Came third of three). Great to get the classic game out again. (1 hr) Game 2 was Vantage. We won an epic victory (Mission and Destiny). We probably could have finished...

And illustration of Inigo Montoya from the PRINCESS BRIDE limping towards the audience. His sword in one hand, his other hand cradling his injuries. This is his key scene in the movie, yielding the line 'you killed my father, prepare to die.'

I'm basic. I like listening to sports talking-people talk about American Football while I work. (ESPN brings back Skip Bayless). Nope. Fuck that. I hate football now. Time for a new sport. I wonder if ESPN 8 "The Ocho" has Jai Alia? Maybe I'm a Jai Alai guy now?

Passed into law in 1982, includes the Charter of Rights and Freedoms--still includes the 1867 British North America Act (now renamed the Constitution Act). Before 1982 our rights were sort of "hand wavium". They're not written down, but we feel we know what they are.

#boardgames Played the first of 4 games (a "campaign season") for Heat: Pedal to the Metal. (Track: Great Britain, 4 player, no NPCs). Came 2nd in a photo finish (same distance, but was on the outer line). Easy to learn, plays quickly, always enjoy playing it*. *NPC cars are the thieves of joy.
