A favorite of mine... sketch by renowned architect Friedrich St. Florian done in one of his RISD classes in 1990. He would take students on foot to a local structure and quickly sketching along with them, then return to the classroom for critiques. On this day, it was the Superman Building.

Finally made it to one place in Providence I’ve never been: the rooftop of the Peerless on a perfect summer evening.

Ah, what could have been in #FriarTown... Here's a 1988 #ProvidenceCollege recruitment letter to Shaquille O'Neal when Rick Barnes was coach... It's up for auction at MYNT Auctions in NYC. Estimate: $1,235-$1,605. The authenticated letter has been signed by Shaq. @pcathletics.bsky.social

Good news: Same old sign, new owners. Dari Bee in Riverside Square is back! It’ll reopen in a few months. I thought it was a goner.

My colleague Chris Allen spotted these guys on Dorrance St. in Providence on Tuesday... My theory: Advance Iraqi security checking the city. The Iraqi soccer team qualified for the World Cup last night and will play at Gillette in June. Either that, or they've come to check out our bike lanes.

The East Bay Bike Path’s long-closed bridges over the Barrington and Palmer rivers look like they’ll be ready to open soon… the railings don’t look fishing friendly.

This poster has a place of pride in my living room. One of the few remaining in excellent condition outside of a museum. Such a cool story behind it, how Conner was commissioned, what his intention was and how his plans were rejected by the NY Film Festival organizers.

Pomfret Vt.: "When the ... colors start to pop, the road is suddenly clogged with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of cars, parked haphazardly. Tour buses come, spilling out passengers with cameras ... visitors often walk brazenly onto private property ... setting out picnics on the sprawling fields."

The Brown & Sharpe strike, which began in 1981. The picket lines stayed up for years, and the strike didn't technically end until the mid to late 1990s. I believe by some measures it's considered the longest strike in U.S. history.

Maybe the strangest named place in R.I. that doesn't exist anymore: Starve Goat Island In the 20th century, landfill on the Providence River made the island disappear. At one time, that area had the most productive oyster beds in the East. Save the Bay HQ sits where Starve Goat Island was.

I suspect that's why they put in the floating bus stop islands along some of these lanes.

We've largely failed on the "What Comes Next" part of this article: a concrete maintenance plan. Not one flex-post remains standing on Manton Ave (daunting to ride against traffic in an unprotected bike lane). And it's been that way for a year. Flex-posts along South Water St. are disappearing too.

5 years ago today, downtown Providence businesses boarded up, fearing a repeat of widespread vandalism, looting that had happened a few nights earlier after George Floyd's death. So much plywood that Westminster St. smelled like a Home Depot.

Snapping turtle finds its place in the sun along the Blackstone River Bikeway in Lincoln. They can live 50 years or more. This guy is maybe middle-aged, and he looked at me like, 'Just try to move me. I'll take your finger off.'

When I was very young, I was convinced the president of the United States lived in Bristol at Guiteras Junior High (now an elementary school). After all, the road to it had a red, white and blue center stripe. It had to be the White House. I hear the school will be closing for good in June.
