hi sorry i just found out that joan ganz cooney, creator of 'sesame street', spent forty years married to maybe the most cartoonishly evil man who ever lived
Peter George Peterson (June 5, 1926 – March 20, 2018) was an American investment banker who served as United States Secretary of Commerce from 1972 to 1973 during the administration of President Richard Nixon.[1][2][3] Peterson was also chairman and CEO of Bell & Howell from 1963 to 1971.[4] From 1973 to 1984, he was chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers.[4] In 1985, he co-founded the private equity firm the Blackstone Group, and served as chairman.[5] In the same year, Peterson became chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations, a position he held until his retirement in 2007, after which he was named chairman emeritus.[4] In 2008, Peterson was ranked 149th on the "Forbes 400 Richest Americans" with a net worth of $2.8 billion.[4][5] He was also known as founder and principal funder of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting fiscal austerity.[6]

god, i feel so bad panning this one. the actors are clearly having fun, the costumes are incredible, and the camp value is off the scale. sadly, the song itself is a little slight. you might even say it's a 5

the song is 0/10 stupid baby pablum, but as a comedy sketch? 10/10. grover and madeline khan are two of the funniest people on the planet and i laughed out loud numerous times rewatching this for the thread.

i love what this song is trying to do musically, and of course buffy sainte-marie could sing the phone book and it'd rule. the lyrics, sadly, alternate between very clever and "this'll do." 6/10

'sesame street' will often try to chase trends or poke fun at its edgeless nature as a children's program, but here we see evidence that through sheer musical virtuoso and inventive visuals, the show can achieve unthinkable levels of effortless, unimpeachable cool. 12/10

one of those slow, lazy songs 70s 'sesame' loves to play over documentary footage of nature or kids playing or adults working. not really the best member of the genre, but not a terrible listen either. 5/10

god, what a clever little gimmick on this one, as counting higher numbers is correlated with singing at a higher pitch. musically it's hard to object to a "twist and shout" pastiche, and there's lots of lovely muppet chaos as the pace picks up. 9/10

i sang this incessantly as a kid--as a suburbanite, i failed to see the irony in bert's fixation on the city's most common bird. as an adult, i'm effortlessly charmed by oz's interjections of "way out" and "dig this", and of course the puppetry. the song's a little repetitive, but i don't mind. 8/10

the sheer breadth of 'sesame' content over its 4500+ episodes never fails to astound. i'd never heard 'ten turtles' before researching this project and am happy to welcome a new bud luckey diddy into my life. a fun, bouncy little tune with lots of fun rhymes. 8/10

'welcome' works better than 'sing' as bilingual call-and-response, though luis is trapped trying to condense bob's lines in the short moments where bob catches his breath, and some lines are too long for luis to translate at all. catchy tune, though. 7/10 (also bob enchiladas doesn't have a t in it)

i believe this is what the kids today call "penis music". lyrically it's is just "the hokey pokey" but slower and less involved. really doesn't help that this era's snuffy looks like he's seen things he can't unsee and sounds like his lungs barely work. 0/10

Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'ladybug's picnic' is just plain catchy, energetic and fast-paced with fun use of limited animation, and an undeniable folksy twang. not the best thing ever, but hard to imagine how one might improve it. 9/10

Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
effortlessly clever with a punchline every line verse, held up by impeccable comedic timing, wonderfully skuzzy animation, and bud luckey at his bud luckey-ist. maybe i'm biased because it was my favorite as a child, but this might be the show's first unimpeachable comedy number. 10/10

Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'c is for cookie' is another song that's literally just the chorus over and over. i guess it fills the classic 'sesame' brief of being an ad for a letter, so i should judge it as a commercial jingle rather than a song. and in that respect, it's kind of flawless! 10/10. i guess. whatever

youtu.be/VI8WIvAthMI&... the original is a fun interaction, but as a song, i'm sorry to say that the constant stops and starts for translations kills its momentum, and i think its innumerable monolingual ballad covers might actually be better. that said, MAN does jaime sánchez have pipes. 7/10

on a show that so often extolls the virtues of ordinary things--like trash or duckies--it seems almost sacrilegious to have a song about ignoring the ordinary phobiles of the sidewalk in favor of chasing rainbows and shooting stars. doesn't help that the music doesn't capture a sense of wonder. 1/10
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
this one's mostly kinda boring, seeing as it's a solid 95% chorus with a spoken word bit in the middle. a c-rate "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" with none of that song's fun or intensity. 2/10

Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'i love trash' is another of those "everyone knows that one part" songs i had to revisit. that one part wears out its welcome pretty quick, but kudos for spinney for trying to vary his performance. the verses are also a lot of fun. dig the harmonica. 8/10

what is there to say about 'bein' green' that's not already been said? i think an underrated thing about it is that it's confident enough in its poetry to frequently eschew rhymes. feels less like a song than a very lyrical poem. basic of me but i gotta give it a 10/10
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
having to listen to 'rubber duckie' all the way through for the first time in a dog's age gave me a newfound respect for it. yeah, the first verse is iconic, but the chorus is criminally overlooked. that said, it's kinda bogged down by overuse of slide whistle. 7/10.

Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
i guess this one's cheating a little. is playing a motif as a character enters commemorating that motif? whatever. this song's nothing. the rhymes are sweaty and the tune is unmemorable. the sketch is just a coupla muppets lazily bobbing around on a blank background. 0/10
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'the king of eight' has wonderful gravely henson vocals, a bouncy tune, a great punchline, and of course exemplary stop motion that feels like mary blair made a cuckoo clock. lyrics get kind of repetitive, perhaps befitting a 'sesame' song about a single number. 7/10, ironically
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
similarly it feels kind of scandalous to have gone three specials without giving 'people in your neighborhood' a lookin. 7/10--similarly pleasant and unassuming, but infinitely remixable in a way 'one of these things' lacks.
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'one of these things' is so effortlessly iconic it was kind of bizarre to realize the show took so long to commemorate it. it feels almost pointless to try and rate it. nevertheless i'm gonna give it a 6/10--pleasant but unextraordinary. a pleasant workman of a song.
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'jazz numbers' is kind of a primordial 'pinball number count', and it's easy to see why it got lost in the shuffle once the goat turned up. musically it's kind of cacophonous and hard to follow, though the animation is pleasantly surreal. 3/10
110
Wack'd 🏳️‍⚧️ @wackd.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
'numerosity' the song is mostly just a lot of spoken word intermittently punctuated by kids screeching. as a sketch, it relies on the sort of continual escalation that causes a time crunch--a compilation of all of them runs sixteen minutes. iconic, but easy to see why it seldom got a look in. 4/10

if we're having this debate again i might as well post my take on it: that frank n furter's many crimes are not to be taken literally, but rather as a device to explore how the queer community can be real dicks to each other but at least we're better than the straights
okay so in my experience there are two primary readings of the film

the first is the "unintentionally bad" reading. in this, all involved have missed the optics of making frank, the film's sole transvestite, into a rapist murderer in the pursuit of mindless campy fun. the second is the "intentionally bad" reading, where richard o'brien's current awful sentiments about trans women were exactly the same fifty years ago, and he consciously made a hateful hit piece against a whole community that was either elevated by cis gays or through some unknown mechanism recuperated by the trans community

but like. if you watch the movie even remotely carefully, a thing no one does because they're all busy screaming over it, there's a big obvious hole in both these readings: frank being dangerous and evil is a viewpoint put forth in the movie itself, first by an actual factual nazi, and then by an aggrieved incestuous couple with a petty grudge. now, i don't know about you, but it doesn't seem to me like those guys are supposed to be reliable speakers of moral truth?

granted, i don't think frank is supposed to be a straightforwardly pleasant person, let alone the film's actual moral core. but i also don't think his actions are meant to be read literally, the same way no murder in film is ever actually *about* the ethics of murder. we need to look at his actions in the context of the film as a whole, one that is operating in a hightened reality. surely we can all agree o'brien is not, inadvertently or deliberately, trying to paint all trans people as cannibals and frankenstein-esque reanimators. and we need to look at the grievances of his, y'know, actual victims, so to speak--columbia's main grievance with him is purely romantic in nature, that he can't commit or take his romantic dalliances seriously. brad and janet pretty quickly decide to sleep with frank and then blame him for the damage to their relationship, and once they're metaphorically made to loosen up with the medusa device, they have no grievance at all.

(also all involve agree that eddie, ostensibly a cis man, was a pretty grotesque person, but forgive him because of tragic aspects of his nature--and sure enough, frank gets an entire tragic number, and this does not save him from his attackers!)

maybe--just maybe--the reason this movie resonates with queer people young and old is because we've all been in social webs of toxic, petty bitches who crave drama. that's what frank is at the end of the day. he's a *jerk*. but the liberation he offers is necessary and freeing, and rejecting him doesn't make you any happier in the long run.

to me the movie's messaging is like "you can be a straight, where everything including the moral degeneracy is soul-crushing and boring. or you can come with us, where everything is a travesty all the goddamn time, but at least you get to have *fun*"

from the 'order of the stick' 'dim sun' alternate universe comic.
roy: Um, that's all really interesting, but we usually prefer to keep the environmental themes of this setting as just sort of a....vague subtext?
haley: Yeah, that way we don't actually need to take a position on anything while still getting credit for being "relevant."
