The marbled gecko that lives on our ensuite window is currently carrying two eggs, which later this summer will hatch into two baby geckos. The eggs can be seen through the translucent skin on her stomach.

The platypus is one of five extant species of monotremes (mammals who lay eggs) and alongside the short-beaked echidna one of two species found in Australia. There are approximately 30,000-300,000 platypuses left in the wild, a much smaller population than the Australian echidna whose population ranges between 5m-50m.

The platypus is threatened by human interventions in naturally occuring waterways, and on a broader level by the impacts of climate change.
