Unfortunately, I could not connect to these stories. After four hours of listening time (30% of the book), I decided to stop.

The most interesting and helpful parts were the author's commentary and summaries. I'll return to this.

It took me a long time to finish this book, and that's mostly because I was bored. I wanted information and it's okay if a reference book is dry, but back to back myths that are incredibly similar was too much for me.

I don't know if I'm qualified to rate this book because I simply did not understand what was going on. The narrator clearly has a lot of issues. That's all I got.

Really enjoyed it. I have followed John Green for so long and loved "Turtles All the Way Down" more than all his other books. "Hollywood, Ending" may now be tied. I would love more adult fiction from him.

Every essay has wild examples of this, where it would just stretch so far away from the original point of the essay, then snap back all of a sudden. I only finished reading it because it was for a book club. I don't like to waste reading time on books I don't enjoy.

metaphorically. She talks about many metaphorical applications of water. Then she seems to remember what her point was and mentions lynchings, and then goes back to the metaphor. It was like whiplash.

There's a section where she talks about racist tendencies in movies about drowning where it's only white people who usually drown, who "get to" drown, and how it's a peaceful death versus violent ones. Then immediately follows this with how she (a white woman) feels like she's drowning

horror. So, I guess I was disappointed at first, but I didn't like what I got even though I tried to switch gears. I thought the forced connections from personal stories to horror movies were, well, ridiculous in places.

I struggled with this book. I suppose I imagined this differently, where a horror movie/element would be the main point of an essay, and some personal thoughts or stories or arguments would be added. Lisowski does this, but this book goes further into memoir than essays about

Recommend a movie to me where I just get to watch an actor(s) really act. They just get time to powerfully ACT. Something like 'Sophie's Choice' (which I've never seen but Meryl Streep is the standard.)

This book walks around you over and over again, dizzying you deeper into different characters' pasts and thoughts. When it reaches a climax, it's like you fall over, and then are pulled back up, and made dizzy again. I found myself entranced with Morrison's writing. I've never read her

My head feels rattled by this book. There are many layers, and it’s pretty intense. I read it quickly, too. I’d like to go back and read more slowly again. The way the protagonist angered me, yet at the same time I felt like she was naive and I felt bad for her — these feelings made the book so

Everything in these stories is alive. I could see it all from the people, to the furniture, to the landscape. The landscapes, too, are a character. Each story has amazing nature imagery. The author always takes time to describe something going on out there.

The stories are captivating, tense, emotional, and most often feel complete. The characters are full people with quirks and charms, and described so well that you can clearly picture them. This is my biggest rave about Elliott's writing: her descriptions.
