Most likely not, at least in peacetime, as 9 other countries have previously signed the same agreement. Agreement text is not published, but speculation is that it results in joint exercises. But, those who know don’t tell and those who tell don’t know. Applies to me too, of course.

That said, the economics of microreactors are still dubious if on-site personnel is needed, and a mystery even if not. So one can be justified sceptic. Of those corporations, NuScale has put in the hard work and has produced new stuff, but the road is long and hard.

The story is not about the demise of those corporations, but about the sudden hype boom associated with Trump administration’s policies a year or two back. Most of those stocks are back to their former values, which was probably predictable.

Technology-wise, I have impression that at least some of those have taken stuff that has been done in US national labs, repackaged it, and called a victory. In that sense I’m not too afraid of boom today. Maybe boom tomorrow, as commander Ivanova says. There’s always a boom tomorrow.

They, like several other startups, have been setting up critical piles to get political goodwill after Trump’s executive orders to get reactors started up by July 4th this year. Road from those to actual power plants is still a long one. That part of the startup scene is very tight with Trump admin

Haven’t followed SMR stuff very closely while in Paris, so don’t remember what is the status of Great British Nuclear. UK idealla should take some FoaK costs on order to kickstart their industry there.

They had some chart available several years ago, but I guess it is not updated. No-one wants to pay FoaK when seeing NoaK costs also. They are building module manufacturing plants, IIRC a set of those should produce modules for two NPPs per year. So some costs would be taken there.

Well there’s a lot of lobbying going on… Note that many of the countries will either need to write their legislation (Poland, Estonia) or update them anyway. Whether they will follow US, UK, or French ways, we’ll see.

Yeah Germany et al. showing the example on that. But, following nuclear newbuild attempts at various stages in Poland, Czeckia, Netherlands, while Switzerland and Belgium also seem to change course. So there is some movement in central Europe. We’ll see if there is any virtuous cycle happening.

That is one reason I’m a bit wary of comparisons to California or Texas. (Also, holy subsidies there Batman!) Whereas in Europe, they are looking at some massive pipelines and colonial energy infrastructure just because There. Is. No. Room in many places. Nordics are an exemption, not the rule.

Onko se ETLAn tutkimus vai miten siitä viestitään? Olihan itse tutkimuksessa tulo- ja pääomaverotuksen kiristyksellä pienin negatiivinen vaikutus. Sitä vain sitten selitellään pois, että ei me oikeasti voida mitään sanoa.

My thesis is that for Finnish discourse, the mere Decision in Principle of Onkalo in 2003 was the turning point. After that, the issue around the waste was no more a philosophical one, but a technical one. Because there was a politically accepted solution, and open questions were engineering ones.

Sitten pitäisi vielä keksiä miten EUn tutkimusrahoitusta uudistetaan, nykyisellään kun rahoitettujen hakemusten osuus voi olla 3% luokkaa. Ja hakemus vie kuukausia työaikaa. Nimim EURATOMin puolelta kaksi rannalle jäänyttä ja kaksi rahoitettua hakemusta koordinoinut. Siellä onneksi helpompaa.

That low-end HALEU targets the customers that are willing and able to pay now. It seems all of the US fuel manufacturers are setting up lines for 8% or so LWR fuel to enable increased discharge burnups for US NPPs. GenIV startups are not paying now for such an investment. Wonder if ever.
