Vancouver School Board
Subject: Introducing Copilot 13+ in secondary schools
May 28, 2026
Dear secondary families,
To support student learning and readiness for a rapidly evolving, technology-rich world, the Vancouver
School Board (VSB) is introducing Microsoft Copilot 13+ for secondary students, aged 13 and older.
Copilot 13+ is an Al-powered conversational assistant developed by Microsoft. It provides a much more
protected environment than other familiar generative Al platforms.
Key features include:

Data protection — Does not use data for training, ensures data is securely stored and encrypted.
Content safety - Filters out inappropriate content, including violence, self-harm and hate.
Currently, Copilot 13+ is available to students in Grades 8-12 who are 13 and older. In subsequent years,
it will be available to students in Grades 9-12, with Grade 8 students gaining access in second semester.

Email containing the following:
Thank you for your interest in presenting at the January
26, 2026, Public Delegation Board meeting, and for
sharing your viewpoints regarding Microsoft Copilot as
outlined in your email.

Public Delegation Board Meetings are intended to provide
members of the community with the opportunity to present
to the Board on matters relating to governance and/or
budget.

The Board values receiving input and perspectives from
members of the school community and understand that
the matter you have brought forward is important to you.
After careful review by the Board Chair and Vice-Chair,
your delegation request was not approved as it does not
fall within the established guidelines for delegations to the
Board, as outlined in Board Policy 7. Rather, your
feedback would be better addressed by staff who are
actively engaged on preparing an updated Acceptable
Use of Technology guidelines to include responsible use
of Al in the classrooms.

Your request has been referred to staff who will follow up
with you and gather your input.

Thank you,

delegations @vsb.bc.ca
