Thanks for the encouragement and I really appreciate the suggestions 🙂 I’m happy with how the small things, like grass and bushes, look. I think octahedral impostors will be really useful for trees and larger objects.

I've been having some frustum culling problems in three.js and the best (and quickest) way I could think to visualize it was to use ASCII art in the browser debug window. Debugging web applications with just console.log() and alert() brings back such fond memories😆 #javascript

I'm in the process of putting in the scaling and distance drops. The idea of making the fade non‑linear is great 🙂 I'm interested to see what visual effect scaling has. I was thinking it might give a stronger sense of distance and make the terrain feel bigger, which would be perfect.

Thanks 😀 My noise layering is all done in Typescript when building the tile data, so I’m still pretty new to GLSL. But I have learnt a lot. I think I'll put Octahedral imposters on the future to-do list 🙂

Now that I have billboards working, I thought I'd have a play and add some bush and tree billboards and see what they look like. I'm pretty happy with the results😀 #webgl #threejs

Thanks, good suggestion! 🙂 A video came up in my feed today about "octahedral importers" (an alternative to billboards). I've never heard of them before! A bit outside my shader abilities at the moment. It's amazing what comes up in my feed after I spend 3 days searching "custom billboard shader" 😂

Decided to try using a grass billboard texture instead of individual blades, much lower GPU cost. I’m happy with how it looks 🙂 The billboard vertex shader took a bit of work, but now that it’s behaving, the results are pretty solid. What do you think? #webgl #threejs #gamedev

It's really fun experimenting with the values and seeing the results. A few decimal points can turn something good into something weird! I recently found a you tube video on "Fast & Gorgeous Erosion Filter Explained" that looks like a really interesting approach. Have you ever tried that technique?

VR Me Up - VR World Builder @vrmeup.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I'm still playing with the glass. When I first turned grass on it was at a view distance of about 200m (~35M blades) and my GPU almost melted 😆I'm playing with fading them out by height and density but it's really effecting the FPS on low spec deviced, so I'm looking into billboard textures at well.

Cools thanks, I’ll give the third octave and ridged noise a try 🙂

VR Me Up - VR World Builder @vrmeup.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This is the result of adding two different noise functions together. The first is Ridged and the second is FBm. I'm using a noise library called FastNoise Lite. It's really fast and flexible, and is available for heaps of different programming languages! #webgl #javascript #typescript

Thanks to @xrtech.dev for advice on adding levels of noise together at 2x the frequency and half the amplitude. I think it makes a huge difference and the terrain looks a lot more interesting. What do you think?

VR Me Up - VR World Builder @vrmeup.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Wow thanks! That extra level of noise really helps break up the smooth hills and makes the terrain look a lot more interesting 🙂

VR Me Up - VR World Builder @vrmeup.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Thanks for the advice! I’m still tuning the noise, so this helps. Just to confirm, you mean layering a second octave at double the frequency and half the amplitude, right? Something like: height = Noise() * amp + Noise() * (amp * 0.5) Is that the idea?

Added a grass overlay. It’s still early, but the system is working: one geometry with multiple blades, replicated via InstancedMesh. A shader handles placement on the terrain and decides which textures the blades appear on. It’s really coming together 🙂 #webgl #threejs #gamedev

Been experimenting using different types of procedural noise and filters to generate more interesting terrains. I find this almost magical... it amazes me what we can create with just numbers and math 😃 #webgl #threejs #gamedev

Been experimenting with different terrain types. Steep areas looked odd because I was projecting textures along the X/Z axis. I added a flag to align textures vertically, and the improvement is pretty noticeable. #webgl #threejs #gamedev

I have 1m terrain tiles which can loose detail when far away and produce banding artifacts (lines). I added scaling across tiles and a pseudo random rotational jitter to break up the patterns and I think the results look acceptable. What do you think? #webgl #threejs

My terrain engine uses a typical height field. Each entry has a height, normal and texture id reference to a full texture in an atlas. It looks good using this approach, but I was getting seams when close up, so I added texture blending today. What do you think? #webgl #threejs

Had a bug unpacking the normals in my shader that was producing bright spots. I thought I would share the fix to prove I'm only human😆 ">>" operator order of precedence! uint iz = normalXZ & uint(0xFF00) >> 8 ; is not the same as... uint iz = (normalXZ & uint(0xFF00)) >> 8 ;

Got my tessellated terrain surface normals working today. It was a bit tricky as they come from the terrain height field data, not the mesh. At least it makes the solid color terrain look a bit better. Still lots to do, but getting there. Next job... textures! #webgl #threejs

Had an idea for a terrain tessellation algorithm in Three.js. It's lightweight, fast, and designed for low‑spec hardware. The prototype is already showing some interesting results. Stay tuned for more. #webgl #worldbuilding #indiedev #threejs

Had some problems with my #VR hand gesture detection, so it's back to debug mode! Does anyone else out there find it kind of "magical" that hand detection is even possible with a camera? I know I do, it makes VR feel so much more immersive🙂 #webxr #gamedev #indiedev #metaquest

Using #rapierjs colliders, I can now turn objects into portals, which means when I touch sometime, I get teleported to a metaport jump point. So I though... what if I turn the ground into a portal? 🤔 What do you know... simple platformer😀 #vr #indiedev #gamedev #webxr

Trying to improve remote #VR head tracking. Original version exactly matched remote players head position and rotation, but the body just seemed to "hang off" the head. Improved version tries to keep the body still. Does this look better? #metaverse #indiedev #gamedev #webxr

Added collider collision detection to the metaport portals making them a lot easier to walk though. You can get some really fun results if you put the entrances and the exits in unusual locations 😀 #vr #metaverse #webxr #webgl #indiedev #gamedev

I finally got jumping working using the #RapierJS CharacterController. It was a little tricky, but here it is! I know... I should have had jumping in the world since the beginning, but I'm so excited to finally have it working. So much fun!!! #VR #metaverse #indiedev #gamedev

Stress testing #RapierJS. 10,000 colliders running at a reasonable 60 FPS in a browser (when the debug overlay is turned off) with only a couple of milliseconds in the physics engine... pretty happy with the results! 😀 #VR #metaverse #indiedev #gamedev

Hit a little problem today. #RapierJS can position and rotate colliders, but not scale them. So I cache the collider mesh at scale 1 and regenerate it on the fly when the model is scaled... actually turned out well. Learning as I go😀 #VR #metaverse #indiedev #gamedev

Spent time creating low-poly collider meshes for the models using #blender3d. Takes time, but worth it. Reduces load on the #RapierJS physics engine. Important, as worlds contain 1000's of objects and run on low spec #VR devices. #virtualreality #metaverse #indiedev #gamedev

Thanks 🙂 I think I understand how matrices work, but what it comes to quaternions I just have to trust the math.

Over the past few years of building VR Me Up, one of my main aims has been to a allow users to (one day) create and share their own large and expansive VR worlds. Is that something people want to do in VR?

It's official... server side Lua scripting is heaps of fun and great for building in my Virtual worlds😀Why didn't I add this ages ago! Can't wait to release this and see what people build... I guess I'm going to have to put together some API docs, or at least a better UI 😁

Working on server‑side Lua scripting in my virtual worlds. Soon you’ll be able to write scripts on the client or directly in #VR, then push them to the server to create and modify worlds in real time. I’m genuinely excited about the possibilities this opens up😀What do you think? Useful?
