We recommit to doing what we can to support reconciliation in our work, to challenge residential school denialism and anti-Indigenous racism, and to seek ways to work in right relation with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

We honour the survivors of residential schools and reflect on the fact that many children never made it home to their families and communities. We think of the pain and intergenerational trauma that the system has perpetuated, and the essential work of healing that needs to take place.

Given the unusual timing & challenges, Vancouver’s Granville Street pedestrian zone 7-Week extension since the World Cup ended is one of the most important street transformation pilots in North America. The public support for the street has been remarkable. This week/weekend is the last. Come see.
People walking along the pedestrian Granville Street in Downtown Vancouver this past weekend during the Dutch Street Market. All sorts of activities on Granville Street, including simple games like cornhole toss. Constantly in use. Simple things like games and chalk work very well, especially with kids and families, but also with adults!Area assigned for kids to play mini-soccer on the street. The ability of the street to attract kids and families was a specific goal for the extension, and a specific success that we’ve seen realized.

LISTEN: If you’re interested in our Vancouver Granville Street Pedestrian Zone running until the end of the summer after its huge World Cup success, I’ll be talking about it with @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social on CBC Radio bright and early tomorrow morning at 6:40am. Subjects include the thread below!
Clouds of people on the Granville Street pedestrian zone in downtown Vancouver today, around 3pm on a Wednesday afternoon.Kids and families playing with the newly installed guitar slide, and you can crank it to produce music as well. It’s been popular since it first arrived, one of many street activations still to arrive. A particular goal for the street is to be more magnetic for kids and families, including on weekdays.

To be clear, Vancouver wasn’t the host city for this Mexico game. Vancouver’s biggest success of the #WorldCup, even as a stand-out co-host city, isn’t in the stadium. It’s in the free civic space. It’s on Granville Street, and the many other watch-spots and people-places around the city & region.
