My redesign of The Expanse's Rocinante - 1% more realistic: bigger for more water (re-mass, RCS) and chemical rockets for landing. Shouldn't turn your landing pad into cancercrete! Also lasers? And radiators? Someone please make a co-op Expanse ship-to-ship combat game. I beg u.
My redesign of the Rocinante with thicc radiators, PDCs, and pulse lasers? Magnetic Nozzle? Also it's larger because it has more propellant for those big boosts and the new chemical landing rockets.Ship parts list of my Rocinante redesign

Yuh, you can see the doors in the nose... Slightly less whelmed about the non symmetrical angle on the engine pods, I hope that's just an artifact of the concept renders, and gets fixed before launch, 'cause my autism isn't gonna allow me to fly a ship with that kind of stuff...

CG Generalist / VFX artist here, can confirm, shit's been bad for a while, but it's been getting worse and worse... Something will have to give at some point, and I doubt it's gonna be the AIs. Yaaaay...
031
Theo Bouvier @voubi.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Right now those AIs are mostly aiming to be correct, because the current priority is making them seem trustworthy and useful. I have absolutely no faith this will continue to be the case once that's a solved issue, and fully expect most LLMs to end up like Grok, manually steered by their company.

Issue is, all those are opaque systems that are trivial to bias. Sure, The Algorithm™ isn't great, but at least the actual content is (mostly) still made by a (varied) mass of people. Here, you'd switch it to a very small group that has already shown a blatant disregard for the law or morality.

The two NISO-class Laserstars of the French Space Forces from the Lunar War worldbuilding project, floating side by side in LEO. Nemesis is visible in the foreground, while Esnault-Pelterie is in the background. Notable is that this is the redesigned version of the ship, with much larger radiators, five one megawatt lasers, and a new (secret) engine that is mostly not visible here. There are some slight differences between Nemesis and REP, mainly the point defense being 200kW laser turrets on Nem and 35mm guns on REP, as well as the style of the rear-facing radar humps.

Blackadder Goes Forth is the closest there is to a live action Ciaphas Cain story... Honestly, with how much overlap there is between the two, I'm very tempted to think Mitchell took at least *some* inspiration from the show for his books.

While Discovery had its (many) flaws, a lot of its Federation designs were quite good, and I'm especially a fan of the Shepard-class, and its Refit the Kerala-class from STO. The canonicity of the latter is arguable, but the former is probably my favorite on-screen design in the franchise.
A screenshot from Star Trek Online, showing the USS GagarinA screenshot from Star Trek Online, showing the USS Kerala, the same general layout as the Gagarin, but in the Motion Picture styleA screenshot from Star Trek Discovery, showing the USS Gagarin getting pursued by a Klingon Bird of Prey. Well, trying to show, the lighting makes it quite a bit tedious to make out the shapes, but eh, that's Discovery for you...

"In 1957, a small white dog from the streets of Moscow became the first of Earth's children to reach the stars, and she never came home.

Today, seven hundred and forty eight years after that first step, she adorns airlock vestibules and guidance consoles. Tailed miners wear her face beneath their suits. Technicians with flopped ears pray in her name before opening the hatch.

Every day, across a solar system and a humanity that has long outgrown its cradle, a hundred thousand step into space and hold on to the little white dog that will guide them home."

Blue Art Time, It is the Law !
A NEMM-class European Frigate (in this case ESS-FR-061 Aldébaran) from The Lunar War, thrusting away from Low Earth Orbit.A line of Monolith-class Space Solar Power Stations in Geostationary Earth Orbit, with the Earth visible in the background. The glint of the reflected light from the sun, coming from behind the camera, and reflecting in the shiny solar panels of the 10km long satellites glows a bright pale blue against the dark background. An icy landscape in the dark, only lit by the reflected light off of a large planet in the background. In the foreground, a small ship is landed vertically on a flat area, two tiny black silhouettes visible near the base of the ship. In the back, a large black spaceship with glowing blue lines is using a powerful laser to excavate the ice sheet, projecting a cone of steam and ejecta from the surface.A small spaceship is moving around a large megastructure using its RCS thrusters. The structure looks like a gigantic corridor, faintly lit by a pale blue glow, the silhouettes of strange relief and twisted architecture contrasting over the haze.

Yeah, BSky compression annihilated those images, first one has some lightly visible batches near the horizon, and the second one has them more evenly spaced in GEO

[...]before it significantly alters the night sky. Other configurations, like non-equatorial GEO and Molniya could make them more noticeable (moving faster in the sky), but that's harder to sim. Below images are an example of a very crowded layout, and have greatly exaggerated brightness.

[...] relatively shallow angles, which reduces the brightness a lot. In extremely clear, unpolluted skies, they'd be noticeable, but only to the trained eye, a bit more if the layout is very regularly spaced, but that's easily fixed. Our expectations are that you'd need thousands (plural) [...]

Yup, and since to avoid losses the panel is always pointed directly towards the sun, you wouldn't get Iridium-like flashes, nor would you see the trusses below (that would be in shadow)... That leaves the rectenna, which would be visible, but in most cases the Sun would be lighting it up at [...]

Theo Bouvier @voubi.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
I did simulate it in fact, with the TLW Monolith-class SSP (10x5km), the panel itself isn't really very visible, the rectenna (1km) is the most visible part (white), and in the worst of cases one of these is barely more visible than an average star. Since they're in GEO, they also don't move much...
