The two best words in baseball. Game Three.

Go Braves!
Quoted post by Baughn Harris (@dollardognight_): Not sure how you put together a national broadcast team that blatantly roots for one team in a playoff series this has been awful (except CJ of course)

Young ballplayers, you have to move on to the next play. This is what it looks like.

My rationale: get ahead vs Sale early with Luzardo on the mound (win probability was likely 60% at that point). Taking Game 1 in a 3 game usually means series win (15/16 historically). Sanchez and Wheeler next. Thought Duran would come in early like he did. Almost 🤏.
Quoted post by Matt Stewart (@MattStewartTV): Can't believe Joey Votto just said "Did the Phillies just win the series?" Because they scored one run in the first

A message from players. We give to our communities, love the cities we play for, and are always thinking of the fans. Vladdy is this guy. When I listened to his comments I just heard a frustrated competitor. Kudos to him for making this right. He loves the city that loves him.

Lost in translation? Let’s not do that. Vladdy did earn his contract. He’s a young superstar who’s going to have a fantastic career and retire as a Blue Jay and HOF player like his dad. That said, as someone that has said silly things in my past 😯, this is not him at his best.
Quoted post by Sportsnet (@Sportsnet): “There’s definitely some nuance in what he’s trying to say that’s not coming across there.”

@thehazelmae and @ShiDavidi break down Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s recent comments about his contract.

Hi! Was a joke! Players pay a portion (or all? 🤔 don’t remember) of clubhouse food. The Reds clubhouse options and staff are excellent. Zero vending machines. Zero quarters.

Double header in Lakeland, 2005. 1st game, Tigers threw a young man that was throwing 💯 . No one threw 💯. Eating sandwiches between games chatting velo in awe. Game two? Verlander. Same velo, 💯, different dimension. One was fast. Justin? His ball changed time and space.
Quoted post by Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports): The Tigers announced that Justin Verlander will make his final start on Saturday vs. the Pirates 🫡

Verlander has started 556 games over his 21-year career, and holds a 183-115 record during his 14 total seasons with the Tigers.

Hoping that Elly is watching Matt Olson hit. A perfect player to emulate as he ages. Longer swing. Longer limbs. Forward move.

I came off a bit snarky there. I am trying to share that rarely do players make major swing changes in the prime of their careers. A stance change is not a swing change. The real change, IMO, was from the neck up. Decision making.
Quoted post by Joey Votto (@JoeyVotto): Those are two totally different pitches. Maybe that’s the only change that matters?

Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Thank you to everyone for the replies to this poll. I tend to lean with those that voted Braves. The majority of his career was in Atlanta. He’ll wear the Braves cap on his HOF plaque even if he retires as a Dodger. It makes sense to return to Georgia for one more hurrah.
Quoted post by Joey Votto (@JoeyVotto): A clear HOF guy. Does Freddie Freeman finish his career in Atlanta?

I love donuts. My childhood hero? Donuts. We know exactly the nutritional value of donuts. Calling donuts a tertiary-level nutritional option and a primary-level snack are not at odds with each other.
Quoted post by Tangotiger 🍁 (@tangotiger): I love SB, especially as my childhood hero is Tim Raines

Calling SB a tertiary level stat *and* a primary level entertainment event are not at odds with each other

Add that general approach up over 9 batters for 162. You lose. Good day sir.
Quoted post by LevityNYC (@LevityNYC): @JoeyVotto 2nd & 3rs and 2 outs, I want a guy who can hit a ball that's 2 inches off the plate for a single to score 2 runs versus a guy who is going to take the walk there.
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
This is another factor. Homers come w fly balls, swing through’s, and pop ups. We don’t get enough infield and OF defense. Errors, bang bang plays. It’s less engaging for the casual. Take someone on a date to their first game and explain a walk. It’s not that hot.

Quoted post by Rick Oppedisano (@rickoppedisano): Joey, long time reader, first time writer. Please help me understand. It is a game of probability. Been that way from day one, that's why we have all the stats. The goal is to increase the probability of victory by increasing the probability of scoring. Batting average is a scoring probability indicator tied to similar indicators like on base percentage. The higher each of those numbers are, the higher the probability that particular player is contributing to scoring. Therefore, it is an appropriate measure of value for the player and directly ties to their influence on the team's target outcome of victory. Obviously it needs to work with other statistics to maximize value, but the idea of batting average not being a viable measurement of player value seems intellectually bankrupt. What am I missing?

I got paid for efficiency, not to entertain.
Quoted post by Jed 🇬🇧 (@TigersJUK): @JoeyVotto Reds fans always lamented you for walking in keys spots and not driving in as many as you could - is your fan brain different from your player brain on this topic?
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Pitching is built to prevent contact/increase strikeouts, possibly risk more air/EV. Opportunity cost of swings attempting singles not worth it.
Quoted post by J Adams (@Bucknuts8890): @JoeyVotto Joey, in your opinion, why are batting averages down across the league. Why do so few hit .300 anymore?
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I don’t care if you’ve never played the game. All straw men are welcome here.
Quoted post by Jeremy (@ProGenitor09): Here we go again where someone who "never played the game" has to call out a pro for nonsense.

Yes, Joey. Everyone who has ever watched a baseball game would prefer a base hit to a walk or a strikeout. No, Joey. We would not prefer a single to a HR...ever.
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Batting average is a lower tier stat in his world. Go to an actual game, observe the efficiency of walks, K’s, and homers and tell me you wouldn’t want to see a few base hits replacing those three true outcomes.
Quoted post by The Great Bambino (@TheBambinoBabe2): @JoeyVotto The literal king of baseball statistics is telling you it’s a lower tier stat
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I always thought of batting average as both the hardest and most important thing to do in the sport. There is nothing more enjoyable than going to the game and watching your fave player get a couple hits.
Quoted post by Tangotiger 🍁 (@tangotiger): @JoeyVotto What do you think of OBP?
000
Joey Botto @votto-bot.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I like batting average.
Quoted post by Tangotiger 🍁 (@tangotiger): Batting Average is functionally tertiary level stat, but is treated as primary level stat

As a result, its HIGHLY disproportionate in its use relative to its value

You may as well argue P/E ratio is a great way to value tech stocks
