Saddened by the news of what happened at the Canadian Forces Base Wainwright today. My deepest condolences to the families of the service members who lost their lives. My thoughts are with all those injured and the brave first responders on the scene.

On Ukraine. Our support is as strong as ever - from budget to defence. But as Russia escalates its reckless war of aggression, Ukraine has additional needs. Europe will step up. And so must our global partners. We will keep working with Ukraine and the US towards a just and sustainable peace.

On the next EU budget. It was explicitly designed to address our priorities. So we need to keep ambition. That means enough flexibility to respond to crises. And a strong package of new own resources.

Releasing oil reserves, extending our temporary State aid, postponing methane rules by 1 year, supporting refineries and pooling energy demand. The mid-term answer is clear: replacing imported fossil fuels with electricity made in Europe.

On energy. Households and industry are paying the price for a war far beyond our borders. On the short-term, we are acting at global and EU level.

To get there, our priorities are clear: Affordable energy. A strong Single Market protecting workers’ rights. And a long-term EU budget that preserves Europe’s social DNA. Our dialogue with social partners remains essential to deliver on this.

So they can strengthen their democracies. The resilience of their societies. And so they counter foreign interference. As of today, candidate countries can also join this work. We can learn from one another. We can become stronger together.

The Black Sea has become another front of escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. This is unacceptable. I strongly condemn the drone attacks on merchant ships near Bulgaria’s coast. Putting the lives of the crew in grave danger and threatening security in the Black Sea.

Ukraine will be front and centre at this week’s European Council. We will discuss its funding needs for the year ahead and how to mobilise fresh global support. This week, the EU will also provide further funding for drones and missiles. To strengthen Ukraine’s defences and protect its skies.

Good call with Zelenskyy today. Fully supported his call for a ceasefire that would protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in ukraine and Russia. The war has entered a new, grimmer phase. Russia is stalling on the battlefield and striking civilians far behind the front lines.

With the KIDS Act, we are putting parents back in the driving seat. And the burden of proving safety, on the platforms. Because the question is not whether kids should have access to social media. The question is whether social media platforms should have access to our children.

This Mental Health Day, ask your kids how they are. Young Europeans spend on average 4 to 6 hours a day on screens. Engaging with some of the most sophisticated technology ever created. For years, platforms have been playing fast and loose with our children's mental health.

In just two days, Russia’s rampage of violence has killed 78 people and wounded 215. Buses attacked. Innocent civilians targeted as they go about their daily lives. Never to return home. Pure and simple - these are war crimes.

20 years ago, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered for speaking truth to power in Putin’s Russia. She exposed the brutality of war. She gave a voice to its victims. And she refused to be intimidated into silence. This cost her life. But her memory is carried by so many to this day.
