The first russian diesel shipment for the US is arriving on the east coast less than 24 hours after a deal securing the product was announced. Now the fun part? The MINERVA ZEN left St. Petersburg, russia on September 22nd and appears to have been heading for the US East Coast all along.

Part of the recent successes are Syrskyi’s legacy. UP notes that Syrskyi left the army in a better position than the one inherited from Zaluzhnyi in 2024, particularly thanks to his corps reform. Some of the current successes (Lyman, Oleksandrivka) build upon earlier momentum. t.me/clement_moli...

Reintegration of AWOL soldiers: several units managed to bring back thousands of AWOL troops by promising better organization, an end to violence, and guaranteed pay. Nearly 10,000 soldiers reportedly rejoined the army.

🔹16 leadership principles defining expectations for commanders and soldiers. 🔹Reform of military education, led by Serhiï Sobko. 🔹Digitization. Drapatyi is pushing commanders to adopt the Delta situational awareness system; some still do not use it.

🔹Eight strategic priorities, presented immediately upon taking office. The first is transforming the armed forces (command and control, structure, doctrine, training, personnel management, digital and unmanned capabilities, logistics, lessons learned, and command culture).

4. Systemic reforms 🔹War plan : According to two sources cited by UP, this is reportedly the first document of its kind, outlining priorities and the development of the armed forces over three decades.

3. Purge and renewal of the officer corps 🔹Dozens of colonels and generals have been transferred to the reserves, while officers sidelined by previous commanders-in-chief have been reinstated.

Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 5h
🔹Assault regiments : -recruitment temporarily suspended, with some personnel reassigned; -units placed under the operational control of various corps

Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 5h
🔹Joint Forces Command (proposed, NATO model). Drapatyi intends to entrust it with conducting operations across the entire front; currently, it covers only parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts. The General Staff would refocus on strategic planning, reserves, and international coordination.
1192
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 5h
2. Command structure 🔹Six force groupings: North, South, West, Joint Forces Grouping, and two new ones: Center (Andrii Biletsky) and Azov (Denys Prokopenko). Since September, these two young brigadier generals have effectively commanded the defense of the Donetsk Oblast.

Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 5h
🔹End of daily briefings with every commander. This frees up his time allowing him to focus on strategic and systemic issues. 🔹Commanders' perspective. The word most frequently used by brigade and corps commanders to describe his first few months is "freedom."

1. Command style: an end to micromanagement 🔹Respect for the chain of command. The commander-in-chief no longer commands units directly; orders are routed through the operational commands' force groupings. Syrskyi would sometimes dictate orders down to the level of specific positional coordinates.

The Kremlin is flooding the information space with AI-generated posts, bot accounts and staged ‘anti-war’ rallies, all pushing the slogan ‘Russia is not my enemy’.

It’s a dangerous feedback loop: a state built on perpetual conflict feeding a global market of permanent violence. Once you open Pandora's box of industrialized mercenary warfare, you can't just close it when the war ends. Thoughts? 🌐🔄

The long-term consequence? russia is cultivating a privatized, globe-spanning legion of kinetic actors who answer as much to profit, resource cartels, and criminal syndicates as they do to Moscow, weaving the Kremlin's foreign policy deep into the global underworld.
1221
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
Think about the convergence: a globalized underworld looking for elite operational expertise (drones, counter-intelligence, heavy weapons handling) and a vast pool of veterans conditioned to look past ethical boundaries for a paycheck.
1160
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
Beyond direct state proxies, there’s a shadow economy at play. Modern conflict requires muscle, logistics, and security. We are increasingly seeing veterans and the logistical networks intersecting with global transnational crime, including cartels and illicit resource extraction.
1160
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
By funneling these surplus fighters into international deployments, the Kremlin achieves two things: it keeps potential domestic unrest at bay and maintains a network of boots on the ground in strategic flashpoints across Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
1160
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
Domestically, this solves a massive economic and social pressure valve. russia faces severe labor shortages, but men returning from the trenches with specialized combat skills and often severe trauma frequently struggle to reintegrate into traditional civilian life.
1170
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
What’s changed is the volume and the institutional normalization. Through PMCs like Wagner, the Africa Corps, and newer spin-off structures, the russian state has institutionalized mercenary work as a legitimate career path for returning soldiers.
1180
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
This isn't entirely new. russia has a deep historical precedent for off-the-books projection of force. From Soviet "advisors" in the Cold War to the rise of the Wagner Group, Moscow has long used deniable proxies to project power without committing regular troops.
1190
Sven-Erik Volberg @volberg.bsky.social · 8h
The sheer scale of russia’s war in Ukraine has created a massive, permanent byproduct: hundreds of thousands of battle-hardened veterans. But as the frontlines grind on, a darker global trend is emerging, these men, and the infrastructure behind them, are becoming a permanent export. 🧵
