UPDATE: HAVE DONE THE ARCADION. I was mostly surprised by how much the blorbo hype was overinflated compared to the actual canon material! Like some of these characters barely exist but you wouldn't know it from their fandom treatment, which is fascinating!

alex playing FFXIV @voidgates.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

DT is my least favorite expansion AND I'm not a huge fan of the Arcadion so hard mode for me is not actually that hard. That moment in the Skydeep Cenote progressing from second boss to third boss literally made me stop and gawk, however, and 95% of my DT fandom enjoyment came from Wachumeqimeqi!

Non-sarcastic question about Arcadion Heavyweight for the Tyrant enjoyers: what is it about him that you enjoy so much? Unironically seeking input because I just finished the raid series yesterday and I'm still processing my thoughts on it.

@bloodwhet.bsky.social asked me for a fic in which the Vault goes a little differently, and I am as ever happy to oblige. (Technically featuring Summer as the WOL, but any black mage Miqo'te will do without much difficulty!)

Sometimes it's a "sit down and read all 138 pages of Thomas More's Utopia to better think about the portrayal of Amaurotine society in critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, the free trial of which now includes the award-winning Shadowbringers expansion" kind of night. Reflections within! 🧵

alex playing FFXIV @voidgates.bsky.social · 12/06/2026

i swear everytime "thancred in shadowbringers" discourse starts floating around i always get tempted to post something like this so this time i'm just gonna do it.

PAUSE FOR CRITICAL THINKING:

1) In what portion of the narrative does this moment occur? Why might
it be located here and not somewhere else?

2) Why might the writer be creating a parallel between Thancred and
Ran'jit? Does it serve to inform a divergence that happens later?

3) Does this sound like something Thancred would say at the end of
Shadowbringers? Why might his opinion have changed?

4) Is Thancred a flat character or a round character? How might this
interaction support one over the other?

5) Why might it be important to show Thancred struggling to accept
loss? To show him eventually embracing the present?

6) How does Thancred's story tie into the theme of Shadowbringers? Does Thancred succeed where other characters may have failed?

I think my best summation of my feelings on DT is "overpromised and underdelivered" with a side of "breached the trust thermocline". I endured the 6.x patches praying DT would redeem the narrative decline, and it didn't. I do hope Evercold will be better! But they're going to have to earn it back.

From the moment she first fought Zenos in Rhalgr's Reach, Summer has been terrified of him. He's become a sort of boogeyman for her, to the degree that she attributes negativity and moments of fear to him that were actually caused by things Elidibus did while masquerading as him. 🧵

controversial take: Thancred Waters could handle Ada Wong but Leon S. Kennedy could not handle Y'shtola Rhul. (although to be fair to Leon, Thancred can't handle Y'shtola either, so)

a thing I enjoy about FFXIV is that you can be running around in the overworld and come across Ser-Galadieux Brightblade dutifully making his way through the MSQ in his plate armor and his paladin heraldry and then fly 20 feet and run into Avocado Toast in a bikini with a frog head pickaxeing a rock

"Scion Fatigue" is so inherently funny as a concept that I think it should be applied to other fandoms. Like damn when is Kirk gonna separate from the crew of the Enterprise, I'm so tired of them shoving Spock and Bones and Uhura in our face all the time. Get a new crew and new stories already!

Thinking about this tonight because I was rereading my headcanon about Niko and Ananta Weaponsmithing Lore, which in a nutshell is that every weapon forged already "has" a true name and it's really just on the smith or its intended user to figure out what that true name is. 🧵

alex playing FFXIV @voidgates.bsky.social · 30/03/2026

A #wolqotd because it's one I also want to answer tangentially for myself: Has your WOL given their weapon a name that isn't just the in-game Eorzea Database one? Which weapon and what name? What was their reasoning for choosing it and/or how did the weapon come to have that name?

I realize this is just me being frustrated and annoyed but I'm honestly so fucking tired of Dawntrail and its "git gud casuals" mentality when I have literally never failed a lockout of the final boss of a variant dungeon before, yet apparently this too is now going to be content Not For Me anymore!

it's so funny to me when people experience consequences for their actions and then are like "it's so disappointing to experience the consequences of my actions. i'm really uncomfortable with the fact that the things i do have consequences? it's very upsetting that people can't just agree i'm right."

i feel like there's a corollary to "you pull you tank" and it's "if you, the tank, insist on collecting up all the mobs but then move them four literal separate times because it's not really a wall pull until you've mashed yourself facefirst into the barrier, then you can DPS them until i get there"

130

alex playing FFXIV @voidgates.bsky.social · 09/02/2026

yeah it's absolutely emet/wol for this one because no one could possibly comprehend how desperately i keep trying to get summer into a narrative position to fuck that old man and it KEEPS NOT HAPPENING the aesthetic is so GOOD and the themes are so CHOICE and it KEEPS. NOT. HAPPENING.

In the midst of an apocalyptic backdrop, a redheaded catgirl (Summer) is mounted on the back of a large horselike demonic construct (Grani) who is itself mounted on a Garlean motorcycle, appearing to slide away from the camera at a perpendicular angle in the iconic "Akira slide" configuration.

I originally designed WOL Summer specifically as "a person who would NOT be absolutely horrified by the Crystal Exarch's actions in ShB and instead would be like 'damn it's hot that you were willing to [all of that] for me'." Obviously in AUs where she's not the WOL, that doesn't come into play! 🧵

never unlocking the arcadion is going to pay hilarious dividends whenever i get around to it...eventually...because literally the only thing i know about it by osmosis are the handful of characters that people are absolutely insane for it's going to be a nonstop conga of "blorbo from their shows"

120

alex playing FFXIV @voidgates.bsky.social · 25/01/2026

This touches on one of my favorite things about ShB - that Emet-Selch, the Exarch, AND THANCRED are all foils of the same "I lost something irreplaceable and am confronted with the horrors it would take to get it back" concept But only Thancred changes himself instead of trying to change the loss.

LRT got me thinking about how I genuinely forget all the time that the Three Baby Mamool Ja (aka the Wachumeqimeqi Siblings) are actually just a thing I made up and not really Dawntrail canon, so here is a thread with some facts about them, in no particular order:

Me looking directly at three (3) tiny Mamool Ja children, one of whom is wearing a princess dress, and the way that they engage with every single adult in their life (except Uvlo who is broke and sleeps in trees).
