Kinship care is when a child lives full-time or most of the time with a relative or close family friend, usually because their parents are not able to care for them. That’s about 121,000 children living in kinship care across England and Wales. More than 11,000 of those live in. Wales.

In Wales in terms of unpaid carers gender 181,330 were female and 129,420 were male. This means that 58% of the caring population in Wales is female, up 1% from 2011. When women hit ages 55-59, one-fifth of women in Wales between 50 and 64 are caring for someone.

Of the 310,000 carers in Wales, the highest proportion of carers are in the 55–59 age group. Older carers, particularly those 80–89, face additional challenges. A significant portion of care, 75+, is focused on dementia care, highlighting the intensity of care in later life.

There are around 22,250 known young people under 25 who are young carers or young adult carers in Wales. Of these 8,250 are under 18 Many young people don’t recognise that they are young carers so it’s possible there are even more young carers in Wales. carers.org/young-carers...
