Discovering 25 novel phyla that fill gaps in the eukaryotic tree of life
Protists play important roles in food chains and symbioses in soil and aquatic environments, displaying an enormous morphological and functional diversity[1][1],[2][2]. While most commonly found proti...

Benchmarking Illumina 2×500, PacBio and Oxford Nanopore for full-length ITS metabarcoding. PacBio performed best overall. More broadly, representative sampling is essential for reliably detecting land-use effects on soil biodiversity! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

How specialized are forest fungi 🍄‍🟫? Very. In our new study of 11 forest substrates, 63% of 2,772 fungal species were found in only a single substrate, and over 70% occurred in fewer than three. 📑 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #Fungi #Mycology #ForestEcology #Ecology #BiodiversityScience
Photo of a green forest with circular close-up insets showing different fungal habitats: leaves, lichen-covered bark, birch bark, a brown mushroom, decaying wood, a soil profile, leaf litter, animal dung or pellets, and moss with conifer needles. The image illustrates the variety of forest substrates where fungi occur.

Do forest fungi prefer to grow in/on specific substrates? Two new papers, including one in Fungal Ecology, examine substrate specificity of boreal forest fungi. doi.org/10.1016/j.fu... doi.org/10.1111/mec.... @tedersoo.bsky.social @drhyfe.bsky.social @sundymaurice.bsky.social
A graph from the paper "Fungi-substrate association patterns in boreal forests" in Fungal Ecology showing sharing of indicators among forest substrates. A) Marginal estimates of the relative abundance of indicator OTUs across substrates, with site and substrate as fixed factors. Substrates with similar letters do not differ significantly (α = 0.05). B) Numbers of indicator OTUs of each forest substrate (left bars) and in other substrates (right bars). Bar height is proportional to the number of OTUs. Grey bars on the left represent OTUs that occur exclusively in the indicated substrate.

How much does sampling design matter in soil biodiversity surveys? A lot. Our new manuscript shows how diversity changes with sampling design, depth, subsample number, and pooling. I'm especially happy this is the first manuscript from Meirong Chen's PhD work, and very proud of her progress.
Heatmap comparing richness ranks across soil sampling designs for three organism groups: animals, bacteria, and fungi. Three side-by-side panels, with various sampling designs by rows, and habitats (marked by tree icons) by columns.

20+ years on #Linux, 🧬🖥️ #bioinformatics pipelines daily - and one relaxed moment running a colleague's script nearly wiped my $HOME 😅 Here's how a silent cd+rm combo escaped my project dir, the original script was quite tangled, but it hid this construct [ ⚠️ danger zone, don't run 🔥 ]
Terminal screenshot showing a minimal bash loop demo: starting in $HOME/project, a for loop runs cd subdir (which fails if missing), then rm * in the current directory, followed by cd .., so on the next iteration it climbs to $HOME and rm * risks deleting files there.

AM fungi are vital for plants but their global richness remains underexplored. In our latest study, out in Fungal Ecology, we analyzed 4,733 sites, revealing 8,517 G-AMF OTUs (5–15x previous estimates) & 600 E-AMF OTUs, the first global count. Read it for free authors.elsevier.com/c/1kJ7y6ExPy...

🍄📖 Do high-impact journals lead to more fungal species discoveries? Think again! Low or even no-impact factor journals contribute significantly! Let's value research quality over impact metrics in funding and hiring decisions! Read more @MycoKeys: mycokeys.pensoft.net/article/136048
