With SQL Server 2016 hitting end of extended support, I took a look at some Shodan stats: it looks like, out of a total of 182K instances exposed to the internet (for reasons beyond human comprehension), 2016 RTM barely makes it in the top 10 versions with 3.8K instances. Blog post incoming.
Shodan top 10 values for SQL Server exposed on the public internet, 2016 RTM appearing at the bottom of the list with ~3k instances, the rest of the instances are 2019, 2008R2, 2022, 2014, 2017, 2012, 2000

PSA for folks using the Intel I225-V network card (possibly other Intel network cards) on Windows 11: One of the recent Windows updates causes the card to constantly disconnect and reconnect when you're doing something with somewhat high bidirectional traffic (in my case a Teams video-call). 1/2
Event Viewer showing multiple entries of event ID 27 (disconnect) and 57 (reconnect)

I've noticed that MS Bing Webmaster Tools has a new "AI Performance" tab. Apparently, my SSMS 22 config blog post has been cited by "Microsoft Copilots & Partners" a total of 284.7K times since I've published it ~6 months ago. Pretty neat, although this doesn't really translate into visits.

SSMS 22.4.1 is out with a bunch of improvements, such as: - Ability to export result sets to Excel, JSON, Markdown, and XML - GitHub Copilot in SSMS and the Query Hint Recommendation Tool are now generally available - Option to group objects by schema (for Oracle and/or ADS fans) in Object Explorer

If a movie villain would have said something like this, people would have pointed out the fact that the dialogue is too heavy-handed.
SAM ALTMAN: "People talk about how
much energy it takes to train an Al model ... But
it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It
takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you
eat during that time before you get smart."

If OpenAI has to go bankrupt for RAM, SSD, and GPU prices to go back to normal then that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make 😅

So I just tested this... TIL I run the SQL Server Central blog. 😅
prompt: why haven't you included Vlad Drumea on that list?
Reply: Vlad,

I focused on a mix of long‑standing community figures and those who publish frequent, in‑depth technical content. Vlad Drumea is indeed a respected voice in the SQL Server space—he runs the “SQL Server Central” blog, contributes to conference talks, and shares useful scripts and performance tips. He was simply omitted from the quick list I provided, not because his work is less valuable.

If you’d like, I can add him to the collection of recommended bloggers along with the others mentioned. Let me know if you’d like more details about his recent posts or any specific topics he covers.

In some weird uno reverse type of way a company has offered to pay me in "exposure" on my own blog for reviewing their product. Thanks, vendor of [#database corruption recovery tool], but, as tempting as being paid with the opportunity to write a review for your product sounds, I'll have to pass.
This collaboration can be mutually beneficial. Your readers will gain access to insightful, high-quality technical content, while we will increase visibility for our product. It’s a win-win opportunity worth exploring.

SSMS 21.3.6 introduces the ability to rename unsaved query editor tabs. Combined with the options to position tabs vertically, color code them based on RegEx patterns, and pinning important tabs (which was possible in previous versions too), makes juggling multiple opened tabs/files more manageable.
SSMS 21 with the editor tabs positioned vertically between OE and the query editor window.
