I wrote a tribute for Bob Flanagan as part of a marathon reading in his honor today. Here's the text of what I read:

Dear Bob,

The least interesting thing you ever did was die. You died like people die; it wasn’t special; it wasn’t art. You’re not a saint of death, you’re not a saint at all. You weren’t suffering stoically and nobly, there was nothing mystical about you, you weren’t self-harming for any bullshit spiritual reasons, you were angry and you were defiant. You were so fucking mad at the world, your desire was being funneled through the narrow limitations of your body, and that desire was bigger and more ambitious than anything you could realize. And that wasn’t fair! You wanted to cum, you wanted to live, you didn’t resign yourself to death and you weren’t in any way dignified. You were messy, hard to live with, hard to love, needy, obsessively moral, full of ambition and lust and bitterness. It makes me angry to see your name invoked as if you were patiently waiting to die, letting yourself starve in some kind of solemn, anorexic, death-worshiping silence. You were corny. You were a goofball. I’m saying this pejoratively, you were an attention-seeking class clown. You could be actively annoying.
