Looked for gif of canary testing and got to a bird which got me curious about how "canary tests" were named. The term "canary test" comes from the old mining practice of taking caged canary birds into coal mines to act as early warning detectors for dangerous, invisible gases like carbon monoxide.

IPv4 route lookup on Linux
Linux uses an LPC-trie for looking up routes. It provides good performance with low memory use even with millions of routes.
