Andy Devine, one of my favorite character actors, was born on this day. Love the drip he brought to the 1975 Clark Gable doc “The King Remembered”. He remembered Gable in his early career as “the guy with the bad teeth” 😁

Jean Harlow chats up Richard Barthelmess, Mervyn LeRoy, and Paul Muni at Warner Bros during a luncheon held for the U.S. Naval Affairs Committee ninety-three years ago today, October 6, 1933. Loveeee the footwear here from LeRoy’s socks and sandals to the Barthelmess cowboy boots

Chevret (in beret, hiding her telltale widow’s peak, pointing across RKO’s Forty Acre backlot) and Nadine Dore (following Lita’s finger) survey the props to be used in the filming of Cimarron (1931) during its production in the fall of 1930. From my collection.

I like how these are always misidentified as being from Wings when they’re not. Anyway here are Wellman and Jean Arthur on the set of Young Eagles with Leo Nomis, Lieutenant R.H. Robinson and pilot Frank Clarke (all photos by Clifton L. Kling)

Nancy Carroll and Buddy Rogers make faces behind director Victor Fleming’s back during the production of Abie’s Irish Rose (1928). Keep seeing this labeled as a photo of Clara during Wings so maybe if we post it with the correct information enough times the truth will persevere

Pretty funny, sensational tale of various complaints as told by Jean Hersholt about von Stroheim and the production of Greed (1924), published in Screen Book magazine, June 1933:

Worth mentioning Edith Head was the Banton assistant here and has Bow’s entire Wild Party film wardrobe attributed to her, though whether she did these identical pieces worn by Clara *and* her girls, I’d love to know as I don’t. Though I do think of this.

Azadia did the original Laura (1944) portrait which wasn’t used in the film. She of course also painted Carole. Oh, and married to Rouben Mamoulian, but that’s of lesser importance here

Jean Harlow and James Cagney #BOTD’s introduction in William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931). Harlow’s Gwen is the perfect match for Cagney’s Tom and is what Henry Cohen called “a moderately crafty provincial charmer, a kind of Mae West played straight.”

Happy Sam Wood day (born July 10, 1883)! He directed Jean Harlow in Hold Your Man (seen here), saying of her after her death: “She was more eager to be constantly learning than any star I have worked with. She was one of the most genuinely kind-hearted people I have ever known.”
