It begins with the courts of appeal. Given that we have never achieved adequate court capacity, we should stop adding one or two a generation, and double them immediately-from thirteen to twenty-six. The number of district courts beneath them should be increased proportionally. Also, the budgetary requirements to reasonably meet the constitutional guarantees of the Sixth Amendment should be assessed and rolled up into the annual budget. This would likely be necessary to avoid the judicial equivalent of the problem of adding just one more lane to a highway, but that's a different essay entirely. For now, we'll focus on the structure of the courts themselves.

Addendum to this, since it is also Saint Gabriel's Day, is that, per the Ven. Mother Juana de la Cruz, Archangel Gabriel was then Virgin Mary's guardian angel. Her Annunciation sermon is less "angel out of nowhere startling an unsuspecting girl" but "angelic bestie dropping by with some big news."

What scene makes you emotional no matter how many times you've seen it?

Takeshi Kitano as Sergeant Gengo Hara in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, dir. Nagisa Ōshima (1983). It is the end of the film and Hara, who had been the captor of the titular Lieutenant-Colonel John Lawrence (Tom Conti) is now, after the war's end, himself a prisoner and facing execution. He and Lawrence reminisce and remark on the reversal of roles, the bitterness of even victory, and an early Christmas in captivity when Hara got drunk and showed mercy to Lawrence. As Lawrence leaves, Hara calls after him. With some beautiful acting by Takeshi, looking like he is genuinely forcing himself to smile through heartbreak, conveying all the pathos of a man saying a final goodbye to a person they gravely wrong but nonetheless love, he says "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence!"

"Stripping of the Altars," does a great job at showing how educated and invested the late-medieval/early modern English laity were in their faith. They weren't overgrown children who thought the priests did magic up on the altar and who needed stained glass picture books to explain bible stories!

The book uses parish registries from the late medieval to Elizabethan period to argue that that the English Reformation was not inevitable nor guaranteed to succeed, and that the Protestantization of the English Church came in fits and starts and was only throughly cemented in the Elizabethan period.
