there is no need for the a.i. hysteria in the news, it is simply a way to capture attention and get everyone to believe it’s the future. sure, it’s useful, but it‘s not cheap or without planetary cost. it’s statistics applied to words, not ‘intelligence’.
The very fact that we cannot distinguish between output from LLMs or humans—which is causing the “crisis” of writing, arts, and higher education—is evidence that we have basically captured language along its most essential axis. That does not mean that we have captured “intelligence” (we have not, and I’m not sure that that’s a coherent idea), and it doesn’t mean that we have captured what Feuerbach called the “species being” of the human; it just means that linguistic and mathematical structure get along, sharing a form located deeper than everyday cognition.

lol
A screenshot of the ‘Concept model: Person Domain, Concept Model’ guidance for the Person data standard. The guidance will probably outline what different terms or concepts mean, but in the screenshot the definition of a person is highlighted for effect: ‘An individual human who participates in business activities or interactions.’

Which makes the founding biases rather clear, doesn’t it?

i am really enjoying getting ebooks from the library, especially because there is a wait. at the weekend this book was going to be available in two days’ time. that changed to two weeks on monday. today it’s a four-week wait. sweet anticipation.

in the year 2000, my parents bought me a copy of ‘music’, a digital audio workstation for the playstation. turns out the developers and publishers released the sample pack for free on the internet archive! sampled some pads (and programmed a new beat).

comes preloaded with some projects so that you can have a play. think they’ve cleverly applied samples pitched to specific notes on some buttons, so you can play a scale without knowing anything about music. (i am in great need of that!)

People are particularly prone when using off-the-shelf Al to produce insights without understanding the inherent risks. There are companies developing specialist Al tools who take care over accuracy, reliability and trustworthy outputs. But most enterprise LLMs, like Copilot, are generic - they can't guide you, and they don't let you configure many
settings. (In fact, Copilot's terms state it's provided for entertainment purposes only.)

6.27% of appointments (PSCs and LLP members) verified between 2025-11-18 and 2025-12-31. Assuming linear growth, they’ll hit ~53% by 2026-11-18, which is when they want 100% of appointments verified.

bbc should do a documentary ‘20 years later: the whale in the thames’ and find out the longlasting impact on everyone who saw it that day. is shameen still living her life? does louise ever think about the whale on lunch breaks? news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4632...

Getting close!
A petition on the UK Government and Parliament Petitions website:
Ban the Civil Service from using slide transitions in presentations

We urge the UK government to ban the use of slide transitions in civil service presentations for their distracting nature. Never in the history of man has it been appropriate to ‘uncover’ or ‘fade out’ a slide, less so when you’re trying to share important information. Microsoft should be forced to make ‘None’ the default slide transition across all government slide decks.

Reminds me of the AI Skills Hub.
"The bourgeoisie ascending on both sides of the Atlantic was a class made of ink and newsprint. Aristocracies across Europe were small; they could be bound by common culture and marriages. The bourgeoisie was large, heterogenous, and not able to form kin connections at scale; they required the “many replications” of print to cohere a class identity. Why then would the bourgeoisie allow, much less encourage, their subordinates to also be literate? Because they needed literate and numerate labor from some and hoped to rule others with a Gramscian hegemony transmitted by literacy." (The Baffler Magazine, We Used to Read Things in This Country)

What could the Service Manual do to encourage better collaboration or new ways of working? And has the lack of a workforce strategy exposed gaps in the Standard and Manual? Riffing on prompts from Rainer Kattel:
With the founders gone, what should the Cabinet Office tell GDS to prioritise next: enforce harder, collaborate more, or professionalise/diffuse capability across departments?
You can read those as three different theories of change:
• Enforce harder: stability through standards and compliance; scale via mandates.
• Collaborate more: stability through trust and co-ownership; scale via coalition.
• Professionalise/diffuse: stability through embedded capability; scale via professions and routines.
