I agree, and I think AI is forcing us to think harder about these things, which I hope will be good for us in the long run.

Whereas with things like art, audio, voice, etc., those are the things that really matter and what make us actually thinking, feeling, creative humans, and outsourcing that to a machine that does that has none of the human experience is dehumanizing, uncanny, and gross.

To me, code is closer to art supplies than it is to the finished art. It is the cost of doing the thing that lets us express our creativity and individuality. Not everyone agrees, and many see the code as part of the art itself, but I see code as more of a cost, not the end goal.

I see it as art versus art supplies. When a person paints a picture, most of what they use is mass-produced and machine-made, like the paints, the brushes, the easel, the paper, the chair that they sit on, etc. And we're okay with that because we see those materials as the means, not the art itself.

metrics should be retired the moment they are identified. pack it up, folks. quantify it some other way

(I feel compelled to mention that I absolutely reject the idea that these things are in any way aware or alive)

I have always hated the phrase "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". no they don't. they require evidence at the same standard of all our other evidence and to say that they require an even higher standard of evidence is to bake your biases into the process

in a culture ruled by vice signalling, "fake it til you make it" leads to scary outcomes

I think what's going to happen is one of the big two labs is going to detonate and the other one is going to be able to slow down without the competition. if even more players get involved (like if google actually has a competitive model), then it's going to get even worse for openai/anthropic

I honestly think that one of the most secretly pernicious things about AI is the way that it lets us do things that were previously impossible unless you involved human interaction. that's been a problem with the computer in general but AI makes it worse along every single axis

"It would minimize the ability of a single senator to block bills with huge support, like last week when Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blocked the popular Kids Online Safety Act." lol, popular is not the word I'd use to describe KOSA even if it has lots of sponsors
