1977-08-02 - excellent scam

1984-06-02 - it's X now
A two panel black and white Heathcliff comic. In the first panel, in a vet's office, a giant music note screeches through the doorway and rattles the vet and a dog. The caption says: "TWEET!"

In the second panel, the vet comes out of the examination room, looking angry. Heathcliff is standing with a whistle in his mouth, and a nonchalant look on his face. Two dogs are barking angrily. The caption on the second panel says: "We don't need a referee!"

1976-03-30 - the heathcliff pocket dimension
A two panel Heathcliff comic in black and white with no caption.

In the first panel, Heathcliff climbs up on top of a bird bath with a devilish look in his eye. A bird appears to be floating on the surface and looks at him.

In the second panel, the bird stands to full height, and is some kind of flamingo or stork, which stands about 3 times higher than Heathcliff. He looks up at it in surprise.

Mr Shultz and another worker are standing on the roof of the Elite Fish Market, pointing up a flag pole. Heathcliff is holding a fish in his mouth and has a smug look on his face, and is sitting at the very top of the flag pole. Mr. Shultz says tot he other worker "We've got him trapped! ... Go up there and get him!!"

1995-09-27 - jesus that's a tall dog

1974-11-15 - well yeah, otherwise the cans will explode
A single panel, black and white, Heathcliff comic from 1974. Outside a house, Fire fighters are holding out one of those trampoline thingies that people jump out of a window onto. 3 fire fighters are holding it and looking up at a window, where Heathcliff is in a top-floor building throwing cans of cat food out. The fire fighter tells the fire chief, "So far, all we're getting is cans of cat food!"

1987-11-07 - might as well just call it mouse food

A single panel black and white Heathcliff comic. Inside a jail cell, a gruff looking convict is standing at the bars with his clothes shredded and scratches all over. He looks concerned and pleads with the prison guard. Pointing towards Heathcliff, who is lounging comfortably on the bottom bunk, he says "He insists on the lower bunk!"

1978-02-17 - the joke is that the pharmacist is actually a Harm-acist, and Heathcliff is going to get mercury poisoning

Two panel black and white Heathcliff comic. 

In the first panel, Heathcliff and 3+ other cats are running through wet cement, while a worker, holding a trowel, looks on with surprise.

In the second panel, Iggy and Willy walk up to the worker, who now looks very upset at all the footprints, and say "Did the Heathcliff marathon go by here?"

A man is in the room with his broken leg suspended from the ceiling in a cast. Part of the cast is unraveling and hanging out the window, where Heathcliff is playing it as if it's a ball of yarn. The man yells "HELP!"

1977-08-12 - Why are Heathcliff and Iggy looking at me? And why is Grandpa so happy that they're about to capsize? And where are the Epstein files?
 A single-panel black and white Heathcliff comic. Grandpa, Heathcliff, and Iggy are on a small sailboat on the water, with a few other sailboats in the deep background. The boat appears to be right on the verge of capsizing, as it is heeled over about 50–52° to starboard.

Heathcliff and Grandpa are pulling on the ropes in an attempt to bring the boat back, leaning over the edge of the boat. For some reason, Grandpa looks really happy as he does this, although he's inches from drowning. 

Iggy and Heathcliff both look at the reader. Heathcliff looks annoyed, and Iggy looks happy. Iggy says, "We'd capsize for sure, if it wasn't for Heathcliff!", implying that Heathcliff is fat

1982-10-14 - you probably need glasses bub
A 3 panel black and white Heathcliff comic. In the top one, Heathcliff is crouched on the floor, trying to look through a mouse hole in the baseboard. A mouse is behind him. In the second, the mouse reaches for the mouse hole, and in the third, he's pulled it off the wall. It's some kind of sticker. Heathcliff looks surprised.

1974-09-13 - that does look troublesome
Heathcliff black and white single-panel comic. The scene: The Nutmegs' house. A plumber is walking out of the bathroom holding a plunger with a full fish skeleton in it. Grandma nutmeg looks concerned, while Grandpa Nutmeg looks down in anger. His target: Heathcliff, sitting on all fours, looking nonchalant. The plumber says: "Here's your trouble."

Iggy and Heathcliff come to the door, and a woman is standing there, taken aback. Heathcliff is wearing a gangster get-up, complete with tommy gun. Iggy says "You phoned for an exterminator?"Heathcliff is driving a stage coach full of mice, with a yak or bison or something pulling it. He's wearing a cowboy hat and holding a whip. Some people are standing outside looking at him and they say "The exterminator came highly recommended."

A black and white Heathcliff comic. Iggy and Grandpa Nutmeg are looking up at the sky, pointing out constellations. On the left, Ursa Major. On the right, an unknown pattern of stars. Grandpa says "That's the Big Dipper, but I don't know the name of that one..."

A single panel black and white Heathcliff comic. A bunch of people are over at the Nutmegs' house for some kind of dinner party. Grandma Nutmeg is in the background setting up dishes. Heathcliff is acting as a server, holding a plate in each hand, on his head, and on his tail. One guy spilled tea all over himself for some reason and says "I hate cats!".

George Gately’s “Heathcliff” first appeared on September 3, 1973. (I’ve known people who thought Heathcliff was meant to capitalize on Garfield’s popularity, but since Garfield first appeared in 1978, that’s clearly not the case.) Here are the first four dailies:

1976-06-22 - is it still animal abuse if another animal does it?
A two-panel heathcliff comic. In the first panel, at the vet's office, Heathcliff and Grandma Nutmeg are in the background sitting in the waiting room. In the foreground, the Vet is holding a pill next to an angry dog, while it bares his teeth at him. He says: "I'll be with you as soon as I can get him to take his pill."

In the second panel, Heathcliff walks over and nonchalantly pulls the dog's tail. The dog opens his mouth, dazed, and the doctor happily tosses the pill in there.

1979-09-12 - In 1979, blue jeans had only recently gone mainstream. Just a few decades earlier, they were banned in schools and seen as rebellious—so seeing 'even Heathcliff' in jeans was crazy 👖🐱
a two panel Heathcliff comic. In the first panel, at the Elite Fish Market, Mr Shultz and another worker are talking to each other. The worker is bringing a bucket of clams to a store window display. He says "Nowadays everyone wears blue jeans... even Heathcliff." Mr Shultz looks alarmed.

In the second panel, Heathcliff is running down the street with a sense of urgency with a fish in one of his pant legs. Mr Shultz is shouting and running after him.

Heathcliff has a duck floaty with flowers on it. He walks by a security guard, following a sign that says "Bird Sanctuary". He looks nonchalantly pleased. The Security Guard says "Just a moment there, 'birdie' ! "

1983-12-06 - frills are where it's at
A two panel Heathcliff comic. Heathcliff is at a grocery store near a giant pile of cans of catfood. Above the cans is a sign that says "NO FRILLS CAT FOOD". Heathcliff kicks it over. 

In the second panel, a store worker looks bewildered at the demolished pile of cans. Iggy says "He prefers frills."

1979-11-08 - Westfinster is the wet-cement capital of the world
A worker is laying some cement manually with a trowel. A sign that says "Wet Cement" is in the background. The worker looks angry and looks over at Heathcliff, who has left pawprints all the way through it, and is now washing his hands in a bucket. He says:

Grandpa Nutmeg and Heathcliff are at the golf course, right next to a hole. Grandpa is laying on the ground with one eye closed, squinting at the golf ball to plan his next shot. Heathcliff is sitting on his back making the same face. A bystander says "He seems to enjoy the game".

1979-08-17 - good smart teacher boy
The scene: Nighttime, in a neighborhood. A crescent moon is in the sky. 
In the background, a garbage truck is on the street, with two sanitation workers picking up garbage cans. The garbage truck has a label that says "Dept. of Sanitation".

In the foreground, Heathcliff is standing on the sidewalk, holding a pointing stick and a poster, as if he's a professor teaching at a school. The poster shows a garbage can being flipped over, with all the garbage spilling out. Heathcliff looks very pleased.

3 mangy streetcats are looking at Heathcliff, looking interested. 

One of the sanitation workers says "Now he's teaching night school!"

Heathcliff is in a dirty arcade with cigarettes laying around on the ground, with some dirty cats. He's playing pinball, which is making a lot of noise. Iggy and Willy are outside the window, and Iggy says "He's been hanging around with a pretty tough crowd!"

Heathcliff and Iggy are at the post office. A fish-shaped package sits on the counter. Heathcliff looks angry. The worker at the counter looks surprised as he looks down at Iggy. Iggy says "You mean he can't mail a gift to a friend?!"

1987-03-07 - what an explosive turkey
a 3 panel heathcliff comic. 

grandma and grandpa nutmeg are standing next to a charcoal grill with a chicken or turkey on it. 

Grandma nutmeg yells "Too much charcoal igniter!"

When grandpa nutmeg lights the grill, the turkey flies off and lands in the birdbath.

Panel 3- Heathcliff sees the turkey and looks hungry.

1993-02-05 - And then the dog went on to star on The Shaggy Dog
a two panel Heathcliff comic:

There's a shaggy standing on some grass next to a sign that says "Beware of ol' gator". Heathcliff stands by with a look on his face that says "get a load of this"

In the second panel, an alligator steps out from within the shaggy dog's hair and gives Heathcliff a menacing look. He sticks his tongue out in surprise.

1975-06-24 - And there is no war in Ba Sing Se
a two panel black and white heathcliff comic.

Panel 1: Grandma Nutmeg and Heathcliff are out at a store. Maybe a pharmacy. Heathcliff is sitting on the floor with a shocked look on is face as the man at the register says "And how about a nice Flea Collar for the kitty?"

Panel 2:  Heathcliff jumps up on the counter and grabs the shocked shopkeeper by the lapels. Grandma Nutmeg says, matter-of-factly, "There ARE no fleas on Heathcliff!"

1977-03-30 - umm, where are the fish tho
A 4 panel black and white Heathcliff comic:

Panel 1: Heathcliff peers over a table edge, looking excitedly at a fish bowl with a castle and fish in it.

Panel 2: Heathcliff dumps the fish bowl over his head, and all the water spills out.

Panel 3: Heathcliff puts the now-empty fishbowl back on the table.

Panel 4: Heathcliff sits next to Grandpa Nutmeg in his easy chair. He has a nonchalant face, and a sand castle sitting on his head. Grandpa nutmeg looks over angrily at Heathcliff and exclaims, "Have you been at that fish tank?!"

Heathcliff is standing in the doorway of a house, with the door open. The apparent occupant of the house, a terrified woman, has jumped off the floor to hang on the door in terror. Iggy and Willy are standing on either side of Heathcliff, looking alarmed. 

Heathcliff has two mice in his mouth, and a question mark above his head. Iggy is holding a sign that says "Pet mice 15 cents each", and turns to Heathcliff to say:

"Cross off another prospective customer."

A two panel black and white Heathcliff comic.

In the first panel, Spike the bulldog is sitting in the grass with a smile on his face. A cute poodle with a bow is walking by on the sidewalk. Iggy and Mugsy are sitting on a fence watching. 

Heathcliff blows a whistle, which is depicted with a music note in a speech bubble. 

In the second panel, Heathcliff looks over nonchalantly as the poodle walks over and punches spike in the face. Iggy says "It's a whistle that only dogs can hear."Seven slugs are sitting on the sidewalk, excitedly raising their hands in the air. Heathcliff is standing on the sidewalk, blowing a whistle. 

Iggy is nearby in the house, talking to Willy, and remarks: "It's a whistle only slugs can hear."

Grandpa Nutmeg is golfing next to a pond. Heathcliff stands there looking unimpressed.

In the second panel, he hits the ball, and it goes right into the pond, right next to Heathcliff.

In the third panel, a dead fish floats to the top of the pond, and Heathcliff licks his lips excitedly.
