“I did a little research on this place before I came here,” he said. My gun, he still pointed it at me. “I know all about it. Who built it, who owned it, who rented it, and where they all are now. I learned how much it cost to build, to buy, and leave. And you know what I found interesting?”
I didn’t move. He laughed.
“Not a damn thing!”
He gestured with my gun towards a door at the back of the room.
“Nothing that could explain that, at least.”
I followed the gesture, bracing myself. Through that old doorway, nothing but darkness waited. Nothing moved. I knew better than to get closer, but I did. I had no other choice but to creep closer and look deeper into that darkness.

#SFFChat From Island of the Baboon God, Freyjrulf's first story with me
The graven stars, designed with odd sharp angles, swelled on the walls, surrounded and connected by swirling lines. In the sunlight, they glowed faintly with their own light. Near the idol’s head, a naked woman danced, stars falling from her fingertips and face turned upwards in joy. Freyjrulf looked up, and jerked his gaze away again. The image still burned in
his mind. Though the crude image of the bleeding eye was only a carving, it held power like no other emblem of the gods did. The creator god did not need or care for worship. The Ancients did so anyway. Now they were dust, and their nameless god still haunted the nightmares of any who saw its representation.

Island of the Baboon God
The aging warrior Freyjrulf travels to an abandoned island in search of an ancient artifact. But more awaits him than mere ruins... Can he find the Artifact before the Tyrant's mage does?Freyjrulf looked out into the night, at the moon, at the waves.
“Where could he find one of these artifacts?” Freyjrulf said.
Oathiel and Keener glanced at each other, matching hesitant faces, matching looks to their mother’s.
“The scouts and infiltrators say the same as our lorekeepers,” Oathiel said. “It is believed one hides on an island, the nearest one to our shores.”
Freyjrulf tilted his head. “Papiodyas?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve heard of that place,” Freyjrulf admitted. “But not of what could lie upon it.”
“It’s about three days, and three nights from here, by boat,” Oathiel said. “Lorekeepers claim the residents were cursed, transformed into monsters or wild beasts. But it’s been centuries since any settlement remained there. Who can say what is the truth?”
Keener licked her lips. “The locals by the shore claim a god lives there, even now. They hear screams and howls in the night, even from the distance of the sea.”
Freyjrulf raised his eyebrows. “Really?”
“Yes,” she said. “And it kills anyone who dares step foot upon the island.”

#HorrorWritersChat Challenging question for me. Have I really written anything truly scary? I can always do more. I can always go further. I can always be scarier. Eh, here's a section from Lock the Last Door.
Things were easier to see by my feet. One of them sat close enough to the door for me to see all of it. The hollow in its body stretched wider than the ones outside, almost to the very bottom of its form. In that hollow, a tiny mouth with blunt, clenching teeth, opening, closing, with each godforsaken breath.
I couldn’t look away. I stared as something inched from between the tiny teeth. A dark, jerking thing, moving as if every inch contained a doll’s joint. It dropped to the floor, and in the light cast by the rest of it, it seemed covered in hundreds of tiny barbs and discolored pimples. Twitching, writhing, it stretched towards the door, towards my feet.
I stepped back but Harlan moved forward. He slammed his boot down onto the foul thing. It broke in two, part under his boot, part exposed. A horrible smell, like rotten fish, rushed towards us. The meaty squelch seemed to swallow up the silence.
The silence. The breathing stopped. The remainder of the flesh thing slammed back into the jaws, and the thing itself stopped moving. Silence stretched, from the room, between the
two of us. The thing, the tongue or tendril, still twitched and squirmed under Harlan’s foot. With a grunt, he kicked it back into the darkness.
“Disgusting animals,” He hissed.
I backed away, not from the darkness, but from Harlan. His gaze raised towards me, and he smiled.

#TransMascProtagJam am I still participating in this? Yes. Am I only now recovering from an upper respiratory infection? Yes 🫠 Anyway here's some bullet points from the start of my outline. It's a short story so I should still get it done in time. (Yes, that's Wes again. He's versatile.)
The man curses something about A, and leaves through the park gate
Wes grabs his water bottle and downs it all, stretches his legs out, but doesn't come out until his watch reads midnight. He doesn't have a phone anymore
He crawls out from under the playset. He stretches, legs numb and hurting
Stumbles towards the bathroom with his bag in tow
Passes a small covered picnic area. A worried cry reaches his ears
Wes turns. There's a fluffy black cat standing on the central table, looking at him with concern.
Wes smiles and goes to say hi to the cat

#TBBChat I love tense conversations! I enjoy conflict in general, really. Conversations are fun to write tbh. Here's something from Wish, after Wes interrupted their dramatic confrontation to get his cake out of the oven 😂
"I underestimated you," the professor said. In the polished surface of his tea kettle, Wes watched him back. The professor leaned against the doorframe, Spades sitting at his feet.

"Most people do," Wes said. He focused his attention on the cocoa powder, popping open the lid and scooping out it with his metal tablespoon. He only needed a bit for this.

"You're… baking," Professor What said.

"Yup," Wes said. "Chocolate cola cake with matching frosting."

"I see," the professor said, as if he didn't understand at all. "Do you do this often?"

"I made two other cakes this week," Wes said. "A carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and strawberry shortcake with fried poundcake and strawberry syrup."

"Decadent," the professor said. "But not what I meant."

Title: America's Most Gothic
Genre: historical nonfiction
Five stars

Rich and heavy like dark chocolate cake. I breathed a thank you after I finished every chapter. Best read during thunderstorms or on a dark night, with a cup of black tea and a few cookies. (Except for that one chapter.)

For lovers of history and gothic lit.

Hello #FaveLineFriday here is a small section from Wish Upon a Storm, my cozy(?) tm hero x cm villain fantasy romance short story inspired by cute 80s cartoons Fun fact: this sequence right here? Not supposed to be steamy! It was planned as something fluffy and sweet. ...That didn't last long 😅
Thunder rumbled. He looked into the professor's eyes. When did he grab onto the man like this? Now they were so close. He could feel Professor What's breath on his skin, his nose, his lips. Even someone without experience like him could recognize the intentions in the Professor's eyes. He wanted more than a kiss, much more.

He'd let it happen, Wes thought. Whatever the professor planned to do to him, he'd let it happen. Just this once, he'd let the villain win.

Thunder screamed as lightning flashed white hot. The lights buzzed and flickered. Everything went dark.

Wes sagged. "Oh, come on."

#FaveLineFriday Writing hasn't been easy, as you can probably tell, but I have written! From my cozy fantasy hero x villain romance WIP Wish Upon a Storm. Proudest writing achievement so far? Probably releasing Island of the Baboon God!
