CPD has had them since 2006. The Tamara Clayton Expressway Camera Act, named for the victim of a fatal I-57 shooting, passed in 2020, giving state police money for its own plate readers. Gov. JB Pritzker has since put millions more into the cams, expanding what they can be used for and where.

Let's start simple. License plate readers are cameras that turn photos of passing cars into text descriptions that can be searched in a database, using the make, model, license plate and location of a vehicle. Users can then set alerts and get notifications for specific vehicles and plates.
