2/2 Buyers subject these individuals to forced agricultural or construction labor, severe extortion, and physical abuse. Women are disproportionately bought and sold into the sex trade or forced domestic servitude.

1/2 An underground, illegal slave trade still exists in Libya where human beings are bought and sold. Captives are generally auctioned as commodities for prices ranging between $200 and $700 USD. Individuals with specific manual trade skills (such as painting or tiling) often fetch higher prices.

It is a bit one-sided at the moment, in August there were 25k users, lots of testing taking place, new people accepted in batches, there should be a wider range of opinions as the social network grows and opens up.

3) Many male slaves were castrated, particularly those working closely with rulers or in private households. The blue-eyed and blonde slaves were sold for the highest price. Pressure from Western nations and changing global laws led to a slow end.

2) Islamic law allowed the enslavement of non-Muslims captured in war or bought from outside the Muslim world. Enslaving fellow Muslims was forbidden. Traders captured a high number of women and girls for concubinage and domestic work.

1) The Arab slave trade, often referred to as the Islamic or Oriental slave trade, lasted for over a thousand years from the 7th century to the 20th century. During this time, an estimated 10 to 18 million Africans—along with Europeans and Asians—were forced into captivity.

In 2021 only 42.9% of Birmingham’s population were white brits. In London the number was 38.6%. The numbers have shrunk even further by now.

0.3 Wh for one query is a lot! I am sure you burn through multiple kettles a day just in front of the screen. Google Search: Uses 0.0003 kWh per query, emitting 0.2g CO2. ChatGPT: Uses 0.0029 kWh per query (10x more energy), emitting 68g CO2.

AI uses huge amounts of electricity too, which means more fossil fuels extracted and burned.

I tried creating my own hashtag, however, it does not appear in discover box. My guess is that the feeds are curated manually by someone somewhere…

As far as I understand, if you scroll down you should be able to find new feeds and pin them. It seems that feeds are based on hashtags.

Today is Black Ribbon Day in Europe. A day of remembrance for the victims of totalitarian regimes. Also today is the day when the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, officially the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also known as the Hitler–Stalin Pact

It was UK who put an end to it. It finished paying off the last debt to the previous slave owners in 2015.

European Parliament @europarl.europa.eu · 23/08/2026
37 years ago, two million people joined hands across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in a fearless demand for freedom from Soviet occupation: the Baltic Way. 🇪🇪🤝🇱🇻🤝🇱🇹 A main walkway in the EP building in Brussels is named in honour of the event.
"Hand in hand towards freedom; The Baltic Way 23 August 1989" reads the text on this powerful historic photograph of the the Baltic Way. The flags of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are overlaid on the image, atop the text.  In the photo, people are holding hands tightly and smiling, with the Lithuanian flag flying above them. Some have even raised their intertwined hands up to bravely show them to the camera. The European Parliament logo is in the bottom right hand corner.
